Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Your truck is the back half of the fourth-generation Super Duty, which ran 2017-2022 on an aluminum body and a fully boxed steel frame. 2020 was the mid-cycle refresh. It brought the third-generation 6.7L Powerstroke and the 10-speed 10R140, but the body carried over from 2017. That's why so many suspension parts here are sold as 2017-and-up fitments.
On a 4x4 F-250 or F-350, the front is a solid Dana Super 60 axle on coil springs, located by radius arms and a track bar. A 2WD truck runs Ford's Twin I-Beam independent front instead, and very little crosses over between the two. Out back, every truck rides on leaf springs, and 4x4 trucks get a 3-inch block from the factory. That block is the baseline most leveling and lift kits are designed around.
Two factory packages change the starting point. The Tremor Off-Road package, new for 2020 on F-250 and F-350 single-rear-wheel crew cab 4x4s, adds a 2-inch front lift, progressive-rate springs, its own 1.7-inch-piston twin-tube dampers and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. The Camper Package adds increased-capacity front springs, a rear stabilizer bar on SRW trucks and rear auxiliary springs on the F-250. Know which one you have before you order.
What fails and why
Super Duty suspension doesn't have one famous failure. The problems we see come from how the truck gets used and modified.
- Rear sag under load. Heavy pin weight on a single-rear-wheel truck pushes the rear leaf pack down. You see a sagging rear, headlights aimed high and a trailer that sways when you're loaded. Load-leveling air springs are the common fix on leaf-spring trucks.
- Axle off center after a lift. Raising a 4x4 moves the front axle sideways and changes caster. The symptoms are an off-center axle, steering pull and shimmy after the lift goes in. Adjustable track bars, track bar brackets and caster kits are the fix.
- The wrong kit for the drivetrain. Because the 2WD and 4x4 fronts are different designs, a 4x4 leveling kit won't go on a 2WD truck, and 2WD trucks have few bolt-on lift options at all.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck is at stock height and you want it to ride and tow right again, start with shocks matched to your drivetrain and model, then add air springs if you tow heavy. Replacement shocks are listed separately for 2WD and 4WD and for the F-450 and F-550, so the model matters as much as the year.
If you want a level stance, a leveling kit raises the front so it sits closer to the rear. Past that, a full lift kit changes more of the front geometry. Either way, plan on track bar and caster parts, because raising the truck moves the axle. On a Tremor, the front is already up 2 inches, so a kit measured from stock ride height won't add its full listed lift.
What we carry
- BDS Suspension lift kits from 2.5 to 9 inches in radius-arm and 4-link designs, many with a FOX 2.5 coil-over conversion, plus a 1-2 inch leveling kit, a recoil traction bar mounting kit and a rear sway bar link kit for 6-8 inch lifts.
- Bilstein B6 4600, B8 5100 and B8 5160 Series shocks, front and rear, plus B8 5112 and B8 5162 Series leveling kits.
- Air Lift LoadLifter 5000, LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate and LoadLifter 7500 XL helper spring kits, WirelessONE and WirelessAIR compressor systems, load controllers, air spring spacers and a replacement on-board compressor.
- Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab) 60- and 68-inch traction bar kits, with bracket kits for the Dana M275 and M300 rear axles.
- SPE Motorsport Stage-1 and Stage-2 2.5-inch kits, a fixed caster kit and track bar bushing kits.
- BD Diesel adjustable track bars and a track bar bracket.
- Daystar 1-inch and 2.5-inch Comfort Ride leveling kits.
Fitment notes
Start with drivetrain: most leveling and lift kits for these trucks are 4WD only. Then check rear wheels and model, since several BDS kits come in separate DRW versions and some are F-450 listings. Kits are built around the factory 3-inch rear block on 4x4 trucks, so tell us if yours has been changed. Some 2020-and-later trucks have to keep the factory track bar bracket with certain kits, and some caster bushings don't fit 10-lug trucks. Air springs carry their own exclusions: Air Lift lists its LoadLifter 5000 for these leaf-spring trucks as fitting most side-mount fifth-wheel hitches, but not Una-Goose and not cab-and-chassis trucks. Many parts here fit a wider span than 2020-2022, so go by the year range in each listing, and verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 4x4 leveling kit fit my 2WD F-250?
No. 2WD Super Duty trucks use Twin I-Beam independent front suspension, while 4x4 trucks use a solid axle on coil springs, radius arms and a track bar. Leveling and lift kits for these years are mostly 4WD-only. Check the drivetrain in each listing before you order.
My truck squats when I hook up the fifth wheel. What fixes that?
Heavy pin weight on a single-rear-wheel truck compresses the rear leaf pack, which shows up as rear sag, headlights pointed high and trailer sway. Load-leveling air springs are the common fix, and Air Lift's LoadLifter 5000 for these trucks is rated for up to 5,000 lb of leveling capacity. Add a compressor system if you want to adjust pressure without hunting for an air hose.
Do I need a track bar after leveling or lifting?
Often, yes. Raising a 4x4 Super Duty pulls the front axle off center and changes caster, which shows up as steering pull or shimmy. An adjustable track bar or bracket recenters the axle, and a caster kit corrects the angle. BD Diesel's adjustable track bars and SPE Motorsport's fixed caster kit are both in this collection.
I have a Tremor. Does anything change?
Yes. The Tremor already runs a 2-inch front lift, progressive-rate springs and its own 1.7-inch-piston twin-tube dampers, and those springs and dampers are unique to the package. A kit measured from stock ride height won't add its full listed lift on a Tremor. Call us with your VIN before you order.
Will parts listed for 2017-2019 fit my 2020-2022 truck?
Many will. 2017-2022 is one body generation, and a lot of the suspension hardware here is listed as 2017-and-up. 2020 changed the engine, transmission and front styling, though, so read each listing's year range instead of assuming. Some BDS kits are titled 2020-2022 only.
