Think of it as three possible rear differentials and, on 4x4 trucks, one front. The Sterling 10.5 under a standard F-250 takes Motorcraft SAE 75W-85 synthetic hypoid oil per Ford's 2021 owner's manual, about 3.3 to 3.5 quarts with the electronic locker and 3.5 to 3.6 quarts without. The Dana M275, with its 10.8-inch ring gear, takes 75W-140 at 3.6 quarts. The M300 under F-350 duallys and the F-450 takes 75W-140 at 3.78 quarts. Limited-slip refills get 7.1 fluid ounces of XL-3 friction modifier. Every 4x4 Powerstroke Super Duty in this range uses the Dana Super 60 front, which runs a 28-spline pinion with a carrier break between the 4.30 and 4.88 ratios. An electronic locking rear differential is available on the Sterling and standard with the Tremor package, and Tremor trucks also get a Dana limited-slip front.
Where differentials wear
Heat is what to watch on these axles. Banks sells its Ram-Air covers for the Sterling 12-bolt and the M275 14-bolt because flat factory covers run hotter under tow, and lube temperature is the wear driver. At your next fluid change, look at what comes out: dark oil that smells burnt has been cooked. Ford's 2022 schedule allows 150,000 miles between differential services in normal duty and cuts that to 60,000 miles in severe duty. Separately, certain 2020-2021 F-350 diesels with the M275 are under NHTSA recall 21V536 for housings that could deform under load, so clear that first if your truck is in the population.
Factory-style service or a heavy-duty cover
If the truck mostly runs empty and the cover is straight and dry, a factory-style service is enough: drain, clean, a new Mahle gasket, the correct grade of oil and XL-3 where the axle needs it. If you tow or haul a camper, look at a heavy-duty cover. PPE makes heavy-duty cast aluminum covers for the Sterling 12-bolt, both Dana 14-bolt rears and the Dana 50/60 front. AFE offers Street Series and Pro Series versions front and rear. The Banks Ram-Air kit is the option here built specifically around cooling.
What we carry
Cover hardware comes from PPE, AFE, Mag-Hytec, SPE Motorsport and Banks Power, plus Mahle cover gaskets and an ATS Diesel Performance drain plug for ATS covers. Gear oil choices include Lucas Oil in 75W-140, 75W-90, 80W-90 and 85W-140, Hot Shot's Secret Blue Diamond and Adrenaline in 75W-90, 80W-110 and 85W-140, and Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W-140. Motorcraft XL-3 covers the limited-slip side.
Fitment notes
Match the grade to the axle, not to the truck. The 75W-140 oils in this collection are the same grade Ford lists for the M275 and M300. Ford lists 75W-85 for the Sterling 10.5, so read the label before you pour. Count cover bolts to confirm the axle: 12 for the Sterling, 14 for the Dana rears. An F-250 can be either one depending on the tow package. 2WD trucks use Twin I-Beam up front and have no front differential, so front covers and front axle parts are 4x4 only. Verify by VIN when the build sheet is not handy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run 75W-90 in my Super Duty rear axle?
Ford's 2021 owner's manual lists 75W-85 synthetic hypoid for the Sterling 10.5 and 75W-140 for the Dana M275 and M300. Stick with the grade your axle calls for. If you want to run something else, call the shop and we will talk it through with your axle and how you use the truck.
How much gear oil does my rear axle take?
Per Ford's 2021 owner's manual, the Sterling 10.5 takes about 3.3 to 3.5 quarts with the electronic locker or 3.5 to 3.6 without, the M275 takes 3.6 quarts and the M300 takes 3.78 quarts. Four quarts covers any of the three.
Does a Tremor need different differential parts?
The Tremor package adds an electronic locking rear and a Dana limited-slip front. Tremor F-250s run the Dana M275 rear rather than the Sterling, so they take 14-bolt covers and 75W-140. Confirm the bolt count before you order.
