Rear differential covers on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Three rear axles show up under these Powerstroke trucks. A standard F-250 gets the Ford Sterling 10.5 with 35-spline full-float shafts. The F-350 SRW, plus F-250s with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow package or Tremor, get the Dana M275 with a 10.8-inch ring gear and 36-spline shafts. F-350 duallys and the F-450 get the Dana M300 with an 11.8-inch ring gear, 4.5-inch tubes and 37-spline shafts. Banks markets its Ram-Air covers for the Sterling and the M275 on the basis that flat factory covers run hotter under tow, and gear oil temperature is what wears the gears.

The rear covers here include PPE heavy-duty cast aluminum covers for the Sterling 10.25/10.5 12-bolt and the Dana M275 and M300 14-bolt, AFE Street Series and Pro Series rear covers, the Mag-Hytec F14-275 for SRW trucks, SPE Motorsport's Sterling 10.25/10.5 cover for SRW trucks and the Banks Power Ram-Air differential cover kit. Mahle P32716 and P38155TC gaskets handle a reseal, and the ATS Diesel Performance 402-009-1000 drain plug fits ATS covers.

Stock reseal or new cover

If the factory cover is straight and you only need to stop a seep or change fluid, a Mahle gasket and the correct oil do the job: 75W-85 for the Sterling and 75W-140 for the M275 and M300, per Ford's 2021 owner's manual. If you tow often, step up to a heavy-duty or cooling cover. Ford's 2022 schedule puts gear oil service at 150,000 miles normal and 60,000 severe, so whatever cover you choose will come off again.

Fitment notes

Twelve bolts is the Sterling; 14 bolts is a Dana. On an F-250, the tow package decides which one you have. Some covers here are labeled SRW, so dually owners should confirm M300 fitment before ordering. Banks' M275 cover fitment ends at 2024 because Ford moved axles by package from 2023 on, but on 2020-2022 trucks the model-and-package rule holds. Certain 2020-2021 F-350 diesels with the M275 are under NHTSA recall 21V536 for housings that could deform; get that cleared before you spend money on the axle. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Sterling 12-bolt cover fit my F-350?

Not on a 2020-2022 F-350. Ford put the Dana M275 under the F-350 SRW and the M300 under the dually, and both take 14-bolt covers. The Sterling 12-bolt covers here are for F-250s built without the High-Capacity Trailer Tow package or Tremor.

Is a Ram-Air cover worth it if I tow?

Banks builds the Ram-Air cover for the Sterling 10.5 and the Dana M275 because flat factory covers run hotter under tow, and axle lube temperature drives wear. If you tow heavy and often, cooler gear oil is the reason to choose one. It does not replace changing the oil on Ford's schedule.
