The 3.0L Power Stroke is a 60-degree V6 with a single Honeywell ball-bearing variable-geometry turbo, an electric vane actuator and an air-to-air charge-air cooler. It makes 250 hp at 3,250 rpm and 440 lb-ft at 1,750 rpm, and every one of these trucks shifts through the 10R80 10-speed automatic. Ford rated the diesel to tow 11,400 lb at launch and 12,100 lb in its 2021 towing guide. That's a heavy trailer for a half-ton V6, and the factory gauges leave out the readings that tell you how hard it's working. Because this F-150 is an OBD-II CAN-bus truck, a plug-in monitor can read live data straight from the diagnostic port and display it on a screen you mount where you can see it.
What a monitor shows that the dash doesn't
Boost, exhaust gas temperature and transmission temperature are the readings worth watching on this engine, especially with a trailer behind it. Boost and EGT aren't on the factory cluster. If you want a dedicated sensor reading on top of the OBD-II data, Edge's EAS accessories add one to an Edge display.
There's no failure pattern tied to monitors on this truck. The one caution, reported by some owners, is battery drain: an aftermarket device left plugged into the OBD port can keep the truck's modules awake and run down the AGM battery, and Ford's Battery Management System will flag it. If the truck is going to sit, unplug the monitor.
Factory gauges vs. adding a monitor
The stock cluster covers DEF level and regen status, and if you rarely tow, that may be all you need. Adding a monitor makes sense when you pull a trailer, climb grades with a load, or just want to know what the turbo and transmission are doing. A monitor reads data. It doesn't reprogram the engine, and the EGR, DPF and SCR systems stay exactly as Ford built them.
What we carry
The monitors and accessories here are from Edge Products:
- Edge Insight CTS3 (84130-3), a universal OBD-II monitoring display.
- Edge EAS EGT Kit (98620), the Daily Driver/Tow kit, for a dedicated exhaust gas temperature reading.
- Edge EAS Pressure Sensor (98607), rated 0-100 PSI.
- Edge A-Pillar Display Mount (18602), listed for 2018-2020 3.0L Power Stroke trucks.
For the rest of the parts we stock for this engine, visit the Power Stroke hub.
Fitment notes
- The 3.0L Power Stroke was sold in the F-150 only, 2018-2021. No Super Duty ever got it.
- 2018-2020 trucks are the 13th-generation F-150. 2021 is the all-new 14th generation, with a different A-pillar and grab handle, so a 2021 diesel needs a mount made for the newer cab. The Edge 18602 is listed for 2018-2020.
- EAS sensors go with Edge displays that accept EAS accessories. Confirm compatibility with your monitor on the product page.
- Use the fitment checker on each product page, or call with your VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my F-150 diesel show boost or EGT on the dash?
Ford's cluster on the 3.0L shows DEF level and regen status, but not boost or exhaust gas temperature. Owners who want to watch those while towing add an OBD-II monitor. It plugs into the diagnostic port and displays the data on its own screen.
Does a monitor change how my 3.0L Power Stroke runs?
No. A monitor like the Edge Insight CTS3 reads data from the OBD-II port and shows it to you. It doesn't change engine programming or any emissions equipment.
Can a plugged-in monitor drain my battery?
Some owners report it. A device left in the OBD port can keep modules awake and pull down the AGM battery, and the Battery Management System will flag the drain. Unplug the monitor if the truck will sit.
Will the A-pillar mount fit my 2021 F-150 diesel?
The Edge 18602 is listed for 2018-2020 3.0L trucks. The 2021 F-150 is the 14th generation, with a different A-pillar and grab handle, so it needs a mount built for that cab.
What should I watch while towing with the 3.0L?
Boost, exhaust gas temperature and transmission temperature are the most useful readings to keep in view with a trailer on. Ford's 2021 guide rated the diesel to tow up to 12,100 lb, and the stock cluster shows neither boost nor EGT.
