Engine components on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke is a compacted graphite iron V8 with aluminum reverse-flow heads, 16.2:1 compression and aluminum pistons, a combination Ford kept through 2019 before switching to steel pistons in 2020. The valvetrain is pushrod OHV with four valves per cylinder, a gear-driven cam and stamped-steel rocker arms on hydraulic lash adjusters, so there is no valve lash to set. Up top, the CCV oil separator sits on the driver-side valve cover between the engine-mounted fuel filter and the firewall, and its outlet hose runs to the turbo inlet. What wears and what is build-level

The sources we use document no valvetrain failure pattern and no head-gasket failure pattern on stock-power 2015-2016 trucks. That shapes this collection. Most component work on these engines is seal and gasket replacement during other repairs, sensor replacement, or parts for a build. The part that does see routine service is the sealed CCV oil separator, which loads up with use; Diesel Hub recommends replacing it every 30,000-40,000 miles. Broken glow plug tips were an early 2011-2012 problem, and every 2015-2016 engine takes the later 96 mm ZD-18 glow plug.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For a stock repair, stay OEM-grade: Mahle gaskets and seals, Mahle piston ring sets in standard, .020 and .040 sizes, the Mahle thrust washer set, and Alliant Power sensors. The upgrade side of this collection is valvetrain and oiling hardware: SPE Motorsport chromoly pushrods and stage-2 valve springs, XDP street performance pushrods, an SPE billet oil pump gear and the Mishimoto performance oil cooler. Those parts belong on engines making more than stock power. Since the factory valvetrain has no documented failure pattern on these years, a stock truck does not need them.

Fitment notes

Read the year range on every gasket kit. The Mahle head set, lower engine gasket set, JV5191 timing cover gasket set and HS54887A head gasket set are listed 2015-2019, while the Mahle piston ring sets, the vacuum pump and its gasket, and the Alliant Power oil pressure sensor are listed 2011-2016. The Fleece fan adapter harness covers 2011-2018. The 2017 redesign split some parts outright: the CCV separator is DC3Z-6A785-C on 2011-2016 and FC3Z-6A785-F on 2017-2019, and the EGR valve went from Motorcraft CX-2638 to CX-2649. Choose the piston ring size that matches what the cylinders were machined to, and verify by VIN when a listing does not match your truck.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stock 2015-2016 6.7L need stronger valve springs or pushrods?

No. The sources we use show no valvetrain failure pattern on these years, and the hydraulic lash adjusters mean there is no lash to set. Stage-2 springs and chromoly or performance pushrods are for engines making more than factory power. If your truck is stock, put the money toward oil changes and CCV service instead.

Which glow plug does my 2015-2016 take?

Every 2015-2016 6.7L uses the 96 mm Motorcraft ZD-18. The shorter 91 mm ZD-17 is only for engines built before December 1, 2012. If you are working on the glow system, the Alliant Power AP63525 glow plug control unit in this collection is listed for 2011-2017.

Will a CCV separator or EGR valve from a 2017-2019 fit my 2016?

No. Ford changed both at the 2017 redesign. The 2011-2016 CCV separator is DC3Z-6A785-C and the 2017-2019 part is FC3Z-6A785-F, and the EGR valve went from CX-2638 to CX-2649. Order by the 2011-2016 number for your truck.
