2011-2014 Chevy Duramax LML Parts & Upgrades

Parts for the 2011-2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD with the 6.6L LML Duramax. The LML brought a 30,000-psi piezo common-rail system, SCR and DEF aftertreatment, and the Allison 1000 six-speed. The one thing to know before you spend money here: the Bosch CP4.2 injection pump lubricates itself with the fuel it pumps, so fuel supply and filtration come first.

The LML Duramax in the 2011-2014 Silverado HD

The LML is the fifth-generation 6.6L Duramax: an induction-hardened cast-iron deep-skirt block, aluminum heads, four valves per cylinder and a cam-in-block pushrod valvetrain, built at DMAX in Moraine, Ohio. It rates 397 hp at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm on a 16.0:1 compression ratio, and the eighth VIN digit is an "8". Fuel runs from a Bosch CP4.2 twin-plunger pump to twin rails and eight piezo injectors at roughly 30,000 psi; a ninth injector sits in the exhaust and doses fuel for particulate filter regeneration instead of using in-cylinder post-injection. Behind it is the Allison 1000 six-speed, RPO MW7, and no manual was ever offered. For 2011 Allison added a stronger torque converter one-way clutch, low-drag clutch packs, electronic line-pressure control and a new TCM. 2011 was a ground-up chassis year under the carried-over GMT900 cab: new fully boxed frames, forged-steel upper and cast-iron lower control arms, three-inch-wide asymmetrical rear leaf springs, a larger steering gear, 14-inch rotors front and rear with hydroboost assist, and the power-dome louvered hood. Silverado HD came as WT, LT and LTZ in Regular, Extended and Crew Cab, with the 3500HD in single or dual rear wheel.

What fails and why

The CP4.2 is the headline. It depends on diesel for lubrication, and US ULSD is thinner than the fuel it was designed around. Failures are reported as early as 30,000 miles, average near 100,000 miles, and some original pumps are past 700,000 — when one lets go it sends metal through the rails, injectors and lines. There is often no warning at all. When there is, it reads as hard or long cranking, a stall and no restart, surging or hesitation, a rhythmic knock from the pump, low rail pressure codes P0087, P0088, P0191 or P128E, a change-fuel-filter message, or metal glitter in the filter and on the fuel pressure regulator screen. GM's repair covers both rails, all eight injectors, the high-pressure and injector return lines and the filter, plus cleaning the chassis lines, hoses, tank and sender. GM also left the LMM's fuel cooler off the LML, which is cited as one reason pump temperatures run higher. The piezo injectors themselves are generally reliable; damage to them is almost always secondary to pump debris. The fuel filter housing can crack and let air in or fuel out, which shows up as a fuel smell, hard starting and power loss. Away from the fuel system: water pump seal and bearing failure is commonly reported around 100,000 miles, the mild-steel bypass tube between the water pump and thermostat housing rusts and seeps at its O-rings, and a surge-tank cap that has lost pressure is a common cause of coolant loss with nothing visible on the ground. On the turbo, the variable-vane position sensor is the weak point, not the bearings, and it shows as lag, soft response, reduced power and P2563 or P003A. Glow plugs and glow plug control modules fail on cold-climate trucks. NOx sensor failure is the most common emissions-system fault on this platform and is heavily documented on 2011 trucks, which received extended coverage; it reads as a Service Emissions System message with P20EE returning after a clear and a derate countdown. Short-trip trucks load the particulate filter with soot and ash and regen constantly. Tow hard and the Allison torque converter is first in line — thin stator, flexing front cover — and transmission temperature consistently over 220 F is a red flag when 175-195 F is normal and 205-215 F is expected with a trailer. Front-end wear follows the same pattern as every heavy independent-front-suspension truck: the factory tie rods are light for the weight, and idler and pitman play shows up on high-mileage trucks as wander and tires wearing unevenly.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For a truck that just needs to go back to work, the OEM-grade side is here: ACDelco TP3018 fuel filters, Mahle lower engine gasket kits and oil pan gaskets, Merchant Automotive filter head rebuild kits, Allison reseal kits, water-in-fuel sensor O-rings and transmission connector seals, and Alliant Power injector, VGT and IPR pigtails. The upgrade list on an LML is mostly about protecting the fuel system rather than chasing power. A lift pump with filtration of the FASS Titanium class supplies 8-10 psi of positive, de-aerated fuel to the CP4.2 with 10-micron water separation and 2-3 micron final filtration, mounts to the bed bolts and taps the factory lines ahead of the tank. A case-return bypass kit routes pump debris back to the tank side instead of the rails, and an upgraded fuel pressure regulator with a non-collapsing screen from Exergy Performance protects the other end. The permanent answer is a CP3 conversion: the S&S Diesel Motorsport 50-state kit carries CARB EO D-756-4, needs no tuning, keeps the stock fuel pressure regulator and leaves every factory emissions component in place, and it is roughly two days of shop labor. Run a lubricity additive every tank, shorten the fuel filter interval to 10,000 miles, and cut the old filter open to look for metal. On the cooling side, replace the steel bypass tube with stainless and fresh O-rings, choose a cast-impeller water pump, and if you tow in Florida heat look at a high-flow or lower-temperature thermostat kit, a thicker-core aluminum radiator or a higher-plate-count oil cooler. Compliant power upgrades keep the aftertreatment intact: a DPF-back exhaust, a CARB-exempt intake, a larger intercooler, a drop-in variable-vane turbo that retains the factory vane control and exhaust brake, and injectors matched to the fuel system. ARP head studs and a correct head gasket are the standard move if the heads ever come off, though most stock-power trucks never need them. For the transmission, a billet-cover multi-disc converter, TCM tuning to raise the roughly 80-psi cruise line pressure, a deep pan and an auxiliary cooler make up the towing package.

What we carry

Pacific Performance Engineering shows up across this page: a diesel lift pump, forged XR tie rod and drilled steering assembly kits, Micropure XR oil filters and billet engine dress-up. Merchant Automotive covers the service side with engine gasket sets, Allison reseal and converter-housing kits, sensor O-rings and seals, while Mahle supplies gaskets. XDP MFG brings the Xtra Cool direct-fit radiator and fuel filter adapter wrenches, and Wehrli Custom Fabrication adds fabricated charge-air and engine-bay parts. MBRP handles exhaust with mufflers and resonators in aluminized and stainless steel; Mishimoto Performance Parts and BD Diesel cover cooling and drivetrain hardware; S&S Diesel Motorsport and Exergy Performance cover injectors and fuel-system parts. Filters and fluids are here too: S&B KF-1062 replacement elements, FASS water separators, ACDelco fuel filters, Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond CK-4 oils and fuel additives, and Lucas Oil. Round that out with Edge Products monitors, EGT kits and pressure sensors, Mean Green high-output alternators, BDS Suspension lift and heavy-duty tie rod kits, G&R Diesel turbo drain kits, Allison gaskets, and the LML-specific service tools — vane position sensor socket, fuel filter head wrench — that these jobs actually need.

Fitment notes

Verify the VIN first: the eighth digit "8" is the LML. The LGH shares the engine family but was never fitted to a Silverado pickup — it went into Express and Savana vans and, for 2011-2012, some 3500HD chassis cabs, at different ratings — so anything rating- or calibration-dependent has to match the VIN. Engine hard parts generally fit 2011-2016 straight through, because the 2015 change was a new cab and sheetmetal rather than a new engine. The exception is the turbo-to-downpipe joint: V-band through early 2015, three-bolt flange for 2015.5-2016, so turbos and downpipes must match. Body-side parts run the opposite way. A 2011-2014 truck uses the GMT900 HD cab, so headlights, taillights, running boards, fender hardware and interior accessories follow 2007-2014 HD fitment and do not carry over to the 2015-2016 trucks. Silverado and Sierra lighting housings are not interchangeable, so order by make. Hub assemblies, and therefore wheel fitment, differ between 2001-2010 and 2011-2019; check the pattern on the truck rather than against an older wheel. Dually changes the order: hubs, brake pads and rotors, and DPF-back tailpipe routing all split SRW versus DRW, and exhaust systems are also sold by cab and bed length. Smaller splits to watch — the coolant surge tank is a 2011-2012 part and differs from 2013 up, the glow plug control module changed after 2012, intake kits and charge-air tubes are year-split inside the 2011-2016 run, NOx sensors are listed 2011-2014 separately from 2015 and 2016 and by upstream or downstream position, and the Allison internal filter is GM 29542833 for 2011-2019, not the earlier TF920. For tuning and emissions-related hardware we list only parts that carry a CARB Executive Order; check that the EO covers your exact model year. And never put DEF in the diesel tank — it is corrosive and will take the fuel system with it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace the CP4.2 before it fails?

Plenty of owners do. The pump's life is unpredictable — reported as early as 30,000 miles, averaging near 100,000, with some originals past 700,000 — and a failure takes the rails, all eight injectors and the high-pressure lines with it, plus a tank drop and line flush. The S&S Diesel Motorsport CP3 kit carries CARB EO D-756-4, needs no tuning and keeps the stock fuel pressure regulator and all factory emissions equipment. If you would rather keep the CP4.2, a lift pump with filtration plus a case-return bypass kit is the insurance we point at instead.

What is the first thing to do to a stock 2011-2014 Silverado HD?

Fuel supply and filtration, before anything else. A lift pump that delivers positive, de-aerated fuel through 10-micron water separation and 2-3 micron final filtration attacks the exact wear mechanism that kills these pumps. Pair it with a lubricity additive every tank and a 10,000-mile fuel filter interval, keep the tank above a quarter, and never run it dry.

Why does my Silverado keep showing "Service Emissions System"?

On these trucks the NOx sensors are the most common cause. There are two, upstream and downstream of the SCR catalyst, and failure is heavily documented on 2011 model-year trucks, which got extended coverage on those sensors. The codes usually look like P20EE coming back after a clear, or P2200 and P229E-series faults with a derate countdown. Sensors are sold by model year and by position, so order for 2011-2014 and for the correct side of the catalyst, and plan on a scan-tool reset after SCR work — miles driven will not clear the derate.

Will a downpipe or exhaust from a 2016 truck fit my 2013?

The DPF-back section usually will; the downpipe will not. Your 2013 has a V-band joint at the turbo outlet, while trucks from mid-2015 on use a three-bolt flange, so look at the outlet before ordering. DPF-back systems are also sold by cab and bed length, and dual-rear-wheel trucks route the tailpipe differently, so have the configuration in hand.

How hot is too hot for the Allison when I am towing?

Normal running is 175-195 F, and 205-215 F is expected with a trailer behind you. Consistently over 220 F is a red flag, with 240 F the stated ceiling. A deep pan and an auxiliary cooler bring towing temperatures down, and a plug-in monitor will show transmission temperature, rail pressure and regen status without changing anything on the truck.
