Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2019-2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins
Ram redesigned the heavy-duty chassis for 2019, and the suspension changed with it. Up front, every 2500 and 3500 runs a solid axle on progressive-rate coil springs, located by a three-link setup of two radius arms and a track bar, with a stabilizer bar across the front. The new frame sets the front springs slightly outboard for roll stiffness. Ram fitted Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks at all four corners; their valving adapts to the frequency of the bumps each wheel sees.
Out back, the two trucks split. The 2500 uses a five-link coil rear with its own track bar, and its optional Active-Level air suspension replaces the rear coils with two air springs. The 3500 keeps two-stage Hotchkiss leaf springs, and its optional air setup adds supplemental air bags that help the leaves. Active-Level gives you Bed-Lowering, Normal/Payload and Trailer-Tow modes, and auto-leveling rear air is part of the 3500 Max Tow package.
The engine matters here too. The Cummins puts more weight on the front axle than the Hemi, so Ram gave diesel trucks different front springs. That is why lift and leveling kits for this generation are listed by engine.
What fails and why
These are heavy trucks on solid axles, and the front end takes the abuse. The front track bar bushings are widely reported as the top cause of wander, clunks and death wobble on this generation. On 2500 coil-rear trucks, the rear track bar bushings wear too. Ball joints are a known wear item; a tired joint shows up as clunking, wander and uneven tire wear, and rebuildable replacement joints are the common fix. The factory FRD shocks and the radius-arm bushings round out the list of main wear parts. When you replace bushings, torque the bolts with the truck sitting at ride height, not with the suspension hanging.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck rides right and you are only fixing wear, stock-height shocks and fresh bushings bring it back. If you want a new stance or bigger tires, the height you pick decides how much work follows:
- 2 to 2.5 inches up front: the most common 2500 mod. It levels the truck and clears 33 to 35-inch tires.
- 3 to 4 inches: you need caster correction, through radius-arm drop brackets or new arms, plus a track bar fix.
- 4 to 6 inches: plan on replacement radius arms, a new track bar, stabilizer changes, sway bar links and longer brake lines.
- 37-inch tires and up: if you still tow, axle gearing becomes part of the conversation.
If your goal is carrying or towing weight rather than changing height, start with helper air springs such as the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate kits.
What we carry
BDS Suspension supplies the lift kits, from 2-inch up to 8-inch systems. You will find 4-link and radius-arm versions, FOX 2.5 coil-over conversions, rear-block versions for the 3500 and Rear Air Ride versions for trucks with factory air. Bilstein covers shocks in the B6 4600, B8 5100, B8 5160 and B8 8100 series, along with B8 5112 and B8 5162 leveling kits and B12 front coil springs with 2 inches of lift. Daystar adds a 2-inch Comfort Ride front leveling kit. Air Lift brings LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate helper spring kits, LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus stainless steel upgrades, air compressors, a WirelessOne tank upgrade and air hose. Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab) builds traction bars, bracket kits, bushings and heims. Sway bar parts round it out: a front link disconnect kit from BDS, an end link kit from BD Diesel and a spacer kit from Banks Power.
Fitment notes
Start with your rear suspension: 2500 coil, 3500 leaf, or factory air on either one. The 2500 and 3500 take different rear lift, leveling and helper-spring parts. Trucks with rear air cannot use coil lifts or coil spacers; they need air-specific kits, which BDS labels Rear Air Ride, and Bilstein lists some rear shocks separately for trucks with and without air leveling. The 2023-2024 Rebel, which offered the 6.7L Cummins as an option, is built on Power Wagon structure with factory Bilstein shocks and 33-inch tires, so it needs kits listed for it. Most of the lift, leveling and shock listings are for 4WD trucks. Many listings also cover years outside 2019-2024. The front suspension design carries into 2025, but newer bumper sensors and camera brackets can change what a kit fits, so read each year range. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Will a leveling kit made for a Hemi Ram fit my Cummins truck?
Do not count on it. The Cummins carries more weight on the front axle and Ram gave it different front springs, so leveling and lift kits for this generation are sold by engine. Buy the kit listed for the 6.7L Cummins and for your model, 2500 or 3500.
My 2500 has Active-Level rear air. Can I use a coil-spacer lift?
No. On an air-ride 2500 the two rear air springs take the place of the coils, so coil lifts and coil spacers do not apply. Pick a kit built for air trucks, such as the BDS Rear Air Ride kits, and make sure any rear shock you order is listed for trucks with air leveling.
What does it take to lift past 3 inches?
At 3 to 4 inches you need caster correction, either radius-arm drop brackets or new arms, plus a track bar fix. From 4 to 6 inches, plan on full replacement radius arms, a new track bar, sway bar links, stabilizer changes and extended brake lines. Compare each kit's parts list against that before you order.
My truck wanders and clunks over bumps. Where should I look first?
Start with the front track bar bushings, which are widely reported as the top cause of wander and death wobble on these trucks. Then check the ball joints, which show up as clunks, wander and uneven tire wear. On a 2500, inspect the rear track bar bushings as well.
Do I need to regear for 37-inch tires?
It depends on how you use the truck. Gearing becomes a real question once you run 37s or larger and still tow. Call the shop with your axle ratio, tire size and trailer weight, and we will talk it through with you.
