Call or Text (352) 722-5295Digital monitors on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel is the VM Motori 3.0L V6 that Ram offered in the half-ton Ram 1500 only. Your years split into two engines. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic use the second-generation engine, rated 240 hp and 420 lb-ft, in the DS body. The 2020-2023 Ram 1500 uses the third-generation engine, rated 260 hp and 480 lb-ft, in the DT body. Both carry a full emissions stack: a diesel oxidation catalyst and a DPF that cleans itself with active regeneration, SCR dosed with DEF and watched by NOx sensors before and after the catalyst, exhaust temperature sensors, and high-pressure cooled EGR, with a second low-pressure EGR loop added for 2020. All of that hardware reports to the engine computer, and very little of it reaches your dash.
What the factory cluster tells you
Out of the box, the cluster reports the DPF as a fill percentage, the familiar exhaust filter 100% full message, and it counts down DEF warnings. That tells you something is happening, but not much about why. Owners of this engine want eyes on regeneration status, DEF level, exhaust gas temperature, boost and transmission temperature. When a problem does need chasing, EcoDiesel owners turn to Mopar-capable software such as AlfaOBD to read exhaust-temperature sensor data, force a regen and test the VGT actuator. A dash monitor is the everyday half of that picture. It does not replace a diagnostic tool, but it lets you watch the numbers on every drive instead of waiting for a message on the cluster.
Factory gauges vs. an add-on monitor
There is no stock replacement part in this category, because the factory gauges live inside the cluster. The real choice is whether to add a monitor and how far to take it. A plug-in OBD-II monitor reads what the truck's own computers report through the diagnostic port, and for a daily driver that may be all you need. If you tow, a dedicated exhaust temperature probe and an extra pressure channel add readings from sensors you install yourself. What any monitor can display depends on the parameters the truck makes available through the port, so check the product details before you buy.
What we carry
This collection is built around one system from Edge Products:
- Insight CTS3 (84130-3): Edge's universal OBD-II monitor, the screen that plugs into the diagnostic port and does the displaying.
- EAS EGT Kit, Daily Driver/Tow Kit (98620): adds a dedicated exhaust gas temperature probe to the Insight.
- EAS Pressure Sensor, 0-100 PSI (98607): adds a pressure reading through Edge's EAS add-on system.
- A-Pillar Display Mount (38604): gives the screen a fixed home on the A-pillar, listed for 2019-2023 EcoDiesel trucks.
The EAS add-ons need the Insight to display anything, so start with the monitor and build from there. You can also shop each piece by type in the Monitors, Accessories and Mounts collections under Digital Monitors.
Fitment notes
Everything here is for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel; this engine was never offered in a 2500 or 3500. The Insight is a universal OBD-II monitor, so it connects to any year on this page. The EAS add-ons report to an Edge screen, so plan on the monitor first. The A-pillar mount is the one body-specific part. Its listing reads 2019-2023, and the 2019 Ram 1500 came in two bodies: the 2019 Classic is the DS body that kept the EcoDiesel, while the new 2019 DT had no diesel. Interior parts follow the body, so confirm yours by VIN, and note that a 2018 falls outside the mount's listed range.
Frequently asked questions
Why add a monitor when the cluster already shows the exhaust filter?
The cluster gives you a DPF fill percentage and DEF countdown warnings, and not much else. A monitor lets you watch far more of what the engine is doing on every drive. The Edge EAS add-ons go a step further, adding exhaust temperature and a pressure reading from sensors you install.
Is a monitor the same thing as a scan tool?
No. A monitor is for watching live data while you drive. For diagnostic work, EcoDiesel owners commonly use Mopar-capable software such as AlfaOBD to force regens, read exhaust-temperature sensor data and test the VGT actuator. Think of the monitor as your everyday gauge and the scan tool as the diagnostic bench.
Does the Insight CTS3 change how my EcoDiesel runs?
No. The Insight CTS3 sold here is a monitor. It reads and displays data from the truck and does not reprogram the engine calibration.
Will the A-pillar mount fit my 2018 Ram 1500?
Its listing covers 2019-2023 EcoDiesel trucks, so a 2018 is outside that range. On a 2019, check by VIN whether you have the Classic (DS) body or the DT body before ordering. Only the Classic carried the EcoDiesel that year, and interior parts follow the body.
Do I need the EGT kit if I do not tow?
Not necessarily. Edge labels it a Daily Driver/Tow Kit, and exhaust temperature tells you the most when the truck is loaded or pulling a trailer. If you mostly commute, the Insight on its own may show everything you want to see, and you can add the kit later.
