Call or Text (352) 722-5295The turbo on the 2003-2004 Ram 5.9L Cummins
The factory charger is a Holset HE341CW (also listed as HY35W), a fixed-geometry turbo with an internal, mechanically controlled wastegate feeding an air-to-air intercooler. Its journal-bearing center section is fed and drained by engine oil only; there is no coolant jacket. The Holset service kit for it is 4031484, covering the journal bearings, seals and thrust washers. Diesel Hub traces the progression from the HX35W on 1998.5-1999 trucks to the HY35W on 2000-2004 and the HE351CW on 2004.5-2007 Cummins trucks.
What fails and why
Most stock-turbo trouble on these trucks comes back to oil, air and heat. Shutting the engine down hot after a tow can coke oil in the bearing housing, which shows up as shaft play, oil in the intake or exhaust, and blue smoke. Poor air filtration wears the compressor-wheel edges; Diesel Hub found exactly that on a torn-down 2003-2004 unit, and the symptoms are lost boost and a changed whistle. After ten-plus years of heat cycles, the turbine and bearing housings can corrode and seize together, which makes rebuilds harder and can leak exhaust at the flange. And with added fueling, the stock charger runs out of air: EGT climbs, black smoke shows under load, and spool slows.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a street truck at stock power, the like-for-like answer is a remanufactured Holset (P/N 4035044SE) rebuilt with new parts; that is the compliant OEM-style replacement for 2003-2004. The turbos in this collection are upgrade units, most cataloged specifically for 2003-2004 trucks. Before you change the turbo, Diesel Hub's advice is to fix the air side first: a better intake horn, exhaust manifold and intercooler boots lower drive pressure and EGT. Add a pyrometer with the probe in the manifold or up-pipe before you add power, because post-turbo readings always run lower and mislead you.
What we carry
Turbos: the Fleece Performance Engineering FPE-351-0304 Cheetah; the Stealth STR, Stealth 64 and Stealth 67G2, built on the HE341CW, from Calibrated Power / DuramaxTuner; and the Aurora 3000/4000/5000 and Aurora compound systems from ATS Diesel Performance. Oiling and install: Fleece install kits for CW and S300-S400 chargers, drain-tube kits and oil feed lines; BD Diesel flexible oil drains, a mounting kit, V-band clamps and the Cool Down Timer 2; G&R Diesel S300-S400 oil supply, drain and line kits; and a PPE T4 oil drain fitting. Heat and sealing: turbo blankets from PPE (titanium woven, T4 and T6), Mishimoto and ATS, MAHLE flange and mounting gaskets, and Turbosmart constant-tension clamps. Calibrated Power also supplies its Stealth Boost Tester regulator and inlet adapters for pressure-testing the boost side. Shopping for a different truck? Start from the main turbos page.
Fitment notes
A 2003-2004 turbo and a 2004.5-2007 turbo do not swap as a bolt-on; the mechanical-wastegate HE341CW and the electronic-wastegate HE351CW are cataloged separately, so verify your build date. At least one vendor lists an HX40-style downpipe for 03-04 trucks alongside its drop-in turbos, so check each turbo's listing to see whether a new downpipe is required and budget for it. Listings marked 1994-2007, like the ATS Aurora systems, span more than one generation; confirm the 2003-2004 version. For a street-driven truck, check each upgrade turbo's listing for its emissions-compliance status where you live, and verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Is my 2003-2004 turbo an HE341CW or an HY35W?
Same unit, two names. Most vendors and Diesel Resource call it the HE341CW; Diesel Hub identifies it as the Holset HY35W type D and says it is often misidentified. Either way, it is the mechanically wastegated, fixed-geometry Holset used until the 2004.5 change.
Will a 2004.5-2007 turbo bolt onto my 2003 or 2004?
Not as a bolt-on. The 2004.5-2007 HE351CW uses an electronically controlled wastegate, while 2003-2004 trucks use a mechanical one, and vendors catalog them separately. Check the year range on the listing against your truck's build date.
How long should I let the engine idle after towing?
Diesel Hub's guidance is 30 seconds to a minute after normal driving and 1 to 3 minutes after towing, so circulating oil can pull heat out of the turbo. The center section is not water-cooled, which is why hot shutdowns coke oil in the bearing housing. The BD Cool Down Timer 2 in this collection is one way to handle it.
Should I upgrade the turbo before anything else?
Usually not. Diesel Hub's view is that intake and exhaust-side upgrades come first, since a better intake horn, exhaust manifold and intercooler boots lower drive pressure and EGT. Once the air side is sorted, the drop-in turbos in this collection are the next step.
What exhaust gas temperature is too hot on a 2003-2004 5.9L?
The maximum for 2003-2004 engines is 1,450F, and sustained EGT is best kept under about 1,250-1,300F. Measure it pre-turbo, in the manifold or up-pipe; a post-turbo probe always reads lower and misleads.
