2003-2004 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Drop-In Turbos

Drop-in turbochargers for the 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins. A drop-in replaces the factory Holset in its stock location, but on these trucks year matters: 2003-2004 units are cataloged separately from 2004.5-2007, because the wastegate control changed mid-2004. Buy by build date, not just model year.

Drop-in turbos for the 2003-2004 Ram 5.9L Cummins

The stock unit on a 2003-2004 Cummins is the Holset HE341CW (also listed as HY35W): fixed geometry, an internal wastegate that is mechanically controlled, a journal-bearing center section fed by engine oil, and an air-to-air intercooler downstream. The Calibrated Power Stealth units in this collection carry the HE341CW name in their titles, and the Fleece Cheetah is listed specifically for 2003-2004 5.9L trucks.

When the stock turbo is not enough

On a stock truck, the factory charger does its job. The trouble starts when fueling goes up: the factory turbo can only handle so much before it gives up, and you see high EGT, black smoke under load and slow spool. Age adds its own problems. Diesel Hub found compressor-wheel edge wear from poor filtration on a torn-down 2003-2004 unit, showing up as lost boost and a changed whistle, and hot shutdowns coke oil in the bearing housing, which shows as shaft play and blue smoke. Any of those is a reason to replace the turbo; the first one is a reason to upgrade it.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If your truck is stock and you want it to stay that way, the like-for-like replacement is a remanufactured Holset 4035044SE, and for street use an OEM-replacement unit is the conservative choice. Every turbo in this collection is an upgrade-style drop-in. Before buying one, Diesel Hub's advice is to sort out the air side first, since a better intake horn, exhaust manifold and intercooler boots lower drive pressure and EGT, and to put a pyrometer in the manifold or up-pipe. Then choose by use: a towing truck wants response and heat control, so ask the shop which one fits how you drive.

What we carry

Calibrated Power / DuramaxTuner supplies its Stealth line built on the HE341CW: the CPS200147 Stealth STR, the CPS200232 Stealth 64 and the CPS200344 Stealth 67G2, all listed for 2003-2004 5.9L trucks. Fleece Performance Engineering offers the FPE-351-0304 Cheetah, also 2003-2004 specific. ATS Diesel Performance rounds it out with the Aurora 3000/4000/5000 turbo system. Oil lines, gaskets and blankets for the install are in the turbo accessories for this truck, and the main turbos page covers every platform.

Fitment notes

A 2004.5-2007 turbo will not bolt onto a 2003-2004 truck, and the reverse is also true; one uses an electronic wastegate, the other a mechanical one. The ATS Aurora system is listed for 1994-2007 5.9L trucks, so confirm the version for a 2003-2004 common-rail engine. At least one vendor lists an HX40-style downpipe for 03-04 trucks alongside its drop-ins; check each listing to see whether yours needs one and budget for it. For a street-driven truck, check the listing for emissions-compliance status where you live, and verify by VIN before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is a drop-in turbo a true bolt-on for my 2003 or 2004?

It is designed to go in the stock location, but check two things first: that the listing is for 2003-2004 rather than 2004.5-2007, and whether a new downpipe is required. Plan on fresh gaskets and oil-line hardware while the turbo is off; those are under turbo accessories for this truck.

Which turbo do I need if I just want stock performance back?

The like-for-like part is a remanufactured Holset 4035044SE, the HE341CW (also listed as HY35W) the truck left the factory with. The units on this page are upgrades, so if staying stock is the goal, call the shop and we will help you sort out the right part.

How do I protect a new turbo after install?

Pre-lube the bearings before first start, keep the air filter in good shape since poor filtration wears compressor-wheel edges, and let the engine idle before shutdown: 30 seconds to a minute after normal driving and 1 to 3 minutes after towing, per Diesel Hub.

Does a turbo upgrade affect my 48RE?

The 48RE sets the ceiling on how far you can take the truck. It is rated for 560-570 lb-ft of input torque, the factory converter is a known weak point, and stock input shafts have snapped with as little as 500 rwhp. If the turbo is part of a bigger power plan, budget for converter and transmission upgrades too.
