Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension components on the 2003-2004 Ram 2500/3500 5.9L Cummins
On a third-generation heavy-duty Ram built around the 5.9L Cummins, the components that decide how the truck drives are the track bar, ball joints, control arms, sway-bar links, steering damper and the leaf-spring hardware out back. The front axle is a solid, coil-sprung unit located by four control arms and one track bar. The rear runs leaf springs with overload leaves. Because the track bar is the only part supporting the steering assembly, it is the first thing to inspect, and the specialists who build these trucks call upgrading it mandatory.
Where the wear shows up
- Track bar bushings: as little as 1/16 inch of bushing deflection compounds through the linkage. Expect wander, an off-center steering wheel and a clunk on turn-in.
- Steering damper: a fatigued damper lets small wobbles grow, so you get shimmy after bumps that settles slowly.
- Ball joints: radial play is not allowed. Worn or corroded joints cause wander, poor return to center and uneven tire wear, mostly at high mileage or on heavier tires.
- Rear leaf packs: sag under a load or trailer leaves the nose high and the headlights aimed up.
Factory-style vs. heavy-duty
Like-for-like parts make sense where the factory design held up. Where it did not, go heavier. That means a track bar with a proper joint instead of rubber bushings, and longer shocks and sway-bar links once the truck is leveled or lifted, because stock shocks do not have the travel for the new ride height. Trucks that work loaded get air springs and an onboard compressor for sag control. Whatever you install, grease the greaseable joints with synthetic grease every 5,000 miles.
What we carry
Air Lift supplies LoadLifter 5000, LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate and LoadLifter 7500XL helper spring kits, WirelessONE and WirelessAIR compressor systems, single and dual load controllers, air spring spacers and a universal cradle, a replacement onboard compressor and air hose. Bilstein B6 4600 and B8 5100 series shocks cover the front and rear. Traction bars come from Wehrli Custom Fabrication (universal 60 and 68 inch bars, a bracket and hardware install kit, and replacement bushings and heims), BD Diesel (a complete traction bar kit) and BDS Suspension (fixed traction bars). For the sway bar, BDS has a link kit for 2 to 4 inch lifts and a link disconnect kit, and BD Diesel has end links and an end-link bushing kit. You will also find a track bar, a BD Diesel replacement bushing kit for 4WD trucks and a Fleece Performance Engineering part.
Fitment notes
Do not be thrown by long year spans in the titles. Front-end parts for this truck are usually cataloged as 2003-2013 2500 and 2003-2012 3500 fitments, and some BD Diesel parts are listed for 2000-2009 Cummins trucks. Check the drivetrain split on shocks, since Bilstein lists separate 2WD and 4WD part numbers. The BDS traction bars are listed for 2500 4WD trucks with a 3.5 inch axle, and the BD Diesel traction bar kit is listed for 2003-2018 Ram 2500/3500 trucks without air suspension. The Wehrli bars are universal, so call us with your cab and bed and we will help you pick the length. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Which component should I replace first on a worn front end?
Start with the track bar. Its rubber bushings start wearing early, and even 1/16 inch of play compounds through the steering. After that, look at the steering damper and the ball joints, which add to wander and shimmy as they wear.
Do I need different shocks after leveling my Ram?
Yes. Stock shocks do not have the proper range of movement once the truck is lifted. Plan on longer shocks and longer sway-bar links at the same time, and match the Bilstein part number to your drivetrain and ride height.
Will the BDS traction bars fit my 3500?
The BDS bars are listed for 2500 4WD trucks with a 3.5 inch axle, so a 3500 owner should check the fitment checker first. The BD Diesel traction bar kit is listed for both the Ram 2500 and 3500 without air suspension, and the Wehrli universal bars are another route.
How often should I grease the front end?
Grease every greaseable joint with synthetic grease every 5,000 miles. While the truck is up, do the track bar check: with the engine running, have a helper turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch both ends of the bar for bushing movement.
