2003-2004 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Shocks

Shocks and shock mounts for 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 5.9L Cummins, mostly Bilstein, front and rear, 2WD and 4WD. The thing to know: shock length is tied to ride height. Thuren Fabrication notes that stock shocks lack the range of movement a lifted truck needs, so settle on your height before you pick shocks.

Shocks on the 2003-2004 Ram 5.9L Cummins

Up front these trucks run a solid axle on coil springs, located by a 4-link and a track bar. The rear rides on leaf springs with overload leaves. Each corner gets its own shock, and front and rear use different part numbers, as do 2WD and 4WD trucks.

Choosing shocks

Start with ride height. Thuren's recommended all-around setup is about 3 inches of front lift with 3/4 to 1 inch in the rear, and that setup needs longer shocks and longer sway-bar links. Lifting the front also shifts weight rearward and drops the rear about 1/2 inch, so plan both ends together. If the truck sags in the rear when loaded or towing, a common concern on 2003-2004 trucks, look at springs or air bags for sag control along with the shocks.

What we carry

Bilstein B8 5100 Series and B6 4600 Series shocks, with separate front and rear part numbers and separate 2WD and 4WD listings, plus Fleece Performance Engineering low-profile shock mounts listed for 1994-2012 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks.

Fitment notes

Several Bilstein listings cover more than one platform or a wider year range than your truck, so read the position (front or rear), drivetrain and engine on each title and confirm it against your 2003-2004 before ordering. Verify by VIN, or call us and we will match the part numbers to your truck.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need longer shocks after leveling my 2003-2004 Ram?

Yes. Thuren notes that stock shocks do not have the proper range of movement once the truck is lifted. Their recommended 3-inch front level also calls for longer sway-bar links, and stock control arms handle that height.

Are front and rear shocks the same part?

No. Bilstein lists separate front and rear part numbers, and separate 2WD and 4WD rear shocks for these trucks. Buy by position and drivetrain, and match both ends to the ride height you are running.
