Gooseneck is where these trucks post their biggest numbers. Ford's 2020 towing guide for the 6.7L Powerstroke rates the F-250 at 22,800 lb gooseneck with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package (535), the F-350 SRW at 22,800 lb, the F-350 DRW at 32,400 lb with the 3.55 axle and 35,750 lb with the 4.10, and the F-450 at 34,600 lb with the 4.30, up to 37,000 lb in its top configuration at a 45,300 lb GCWR. Ford's own hitch prep package puts a crossmember, L-brackets and pucks under the bed so OEM-compatible heads can mount, and installing it means pulling the bed. Plan on about 15% of the loaded trailer weight sitting on the ball, and that weight comes out of payload.

What to check before you tow

Short-box trucks need care. On the 6.75-ft box, Ford warns that a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer can contact the cab in a 90-degree turn if the combination has not been checked. The space under the bed is shared, too. Some aftermarket fuel tanks and air springs are not compatible with every under-bed hitch, and Air Lift's kits exclude Una-Goose hitches. If you add Ford's crossmember, Ford's instructions say a bed liner cannot be reinstalled afterward. On certain 2021 F-350 and F-450 trucks, ask a dealer about recall 21V379000 for a cracked left-hand fifth-wheel mounting bracket under the bed.
