Super Duty trucks with the 6.7L Powerstroke take Ford's factory fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitch prep package, kit SKHC3J-5F057-AB, often called the puck system. It puts a hitch crossmember, outer L-brackets, locating pins, a trim kit and a trailer hitch prep harness under the bed, and installing it means taking the bed off. Once the prep is in, an OEM-compatible fifth-wheel head mounts to the pucks. Ratings climb with the truck. The F-250 is hitch-limited to 19,000 lb on a fifth-wheel. For reference, Ford's gooseneck ratings run 22,800 lb on the F-350 SRW, up to 35,750 lb on the F-350 DRW and 37,000 lb on the F-450, but always check the rating on the hitch itself, because the F-250 shows the hitch can be the limit. Pin weight runs about 15% of the loaded trailer and comes out of payload.
What to watch for
Certain 2021 F-350 and F-450 trucks are under NHTSA recall 21V379000 for a cracked left-hand fifth-wheel mounting bracket under the bed; a dealer inspects and replaces it. Short-box trucks need a careful check too. On the 6.75-ft box, Ford warns the trailer can contact the cab in a 90-degree turn if the combination has not been checked. Measure your trailer against the tailgate heights Ford lists for clearance: 57.8-60.0 inches on the F-250, 56.7-59.7 on the F-350 SRW, 58.1-58.9 on the F-350 DRW, 58.8-59.3 on the F-450 and 59.7-61.3 on the Tremor.

Fitment notes
Find out whether your truck already has Ford's prep package before you buy a head; look under the bed for the crossmember. If you add the crossmember yourself, Ford's instructions say a bed liner cannot be reinstalled afterward. Some aftermarket fuel tanks and air springs are not compatible with every under-bed hitch, and Air Lift's kits exclude Una-Goose hitches, so tell us what else lives under your bed. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my F-250 rated lower on a fifth-wheel than on a gooseneck?
Ford's 2020 towing guide caps the F-250's fifth-wheel rating at 19,000 lb because of the hitch rating, even when the truck is rated 22,800 lb on a gooseneck with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package. The hitch, not the truck, sets that number.
Do I have to pull the bed to install Ford's fifth-wheel prep?
Yes. Ford's prep package (SKHC3J-5F057-AB) installs a crossmember and L-brackets under the bed, and the instructions call for removing the bed, which is held on with 24EP Torx Plus bolts. Plan the job and the tools before you start.
Is my 2021 F-350 part of the fifth-wheel bracket recall?
It could be. NHTSA recall 21V379000 covers certain 2021 F-350 and F-450 trucks with a cracked left-hand fifth-wheel mounting bracket. Have a Ford dealer run your VIN; they inspect the bracket and replace it if needed.
