Exhaust leaves the turbo and passes through the diesel oxidation catalyst, the silicon-carbide DPF and the SCR catalyst with DEF dosing before it reaches the muffler. Factory exhaust and aftermarket DPF-back systems both route through that aftertreatment first. A DPF-back kit replaces only the muffler and tailpipe section behind the DPF and SCR. So the muffler is the part of this exhaust you change for sound, while the emissions hardware stays where Ford put it.
Choosing a muffler
Start with diameter. MBRP's universal 409 stainless mufflers come in 4-inch and 5-inch, and the DPF-back systems for this truck are 4-inch or 5-inch too, so match what is on the truck. Then pick the sound. If quiet is the goal, MBRP's Quiet Tone models come as a universal 4-inch and an Armor Lite 5-inch. If flow is the goal, the GP290022 is an Armor Plus 5-inch high-flow muffler. MBRP also offers diesel resonators in aluminized or stainless steel, and the M20681 Armor Lite resonator muffler.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the factory muffler is solid and you like the sound, leave it. A replacement muffler changes tone. A full DPF-back system changes tone and flow, and MBRP claims up to 18 hp, 28 lb-ft and up to 200 degrees F lower EGT from its DPF-back alone. If you want a bolt-in kit built for this truck rather than a universal part, the MBRP filter-back systems in our exhaust section are the compliant choice.

Fitment notes
These are universal parts, sized by diameter rather than built for one truck, so they get fitted into your existing pipe. Measure the pipe diameter and the space you have behind the aftertreatment before you order. If you are pairing a muffler with a DPF-back system, those systems are typically sold as 2017-2026 pickup fitments, and the 2023 and newer cab and chassis and some F-450 configurations differ, so check cab, bed and SRW or DRW. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Does swapping the muffler touch the emissions equipment?
No. On the 2020-2022 6.7L the muffler sits behind the DOC, DPF and SCR, and a DPF-back change replaces only the muffler and tailpipe section. The aftertreatment stays in place.
Should I buy a 4-inch or 5-inch muffler?
Match the pipe on your truck. MBRP's DPF-back systems for the 6.7L come in 4-inch and 5-inch, and the universal mufflers here come in both sizes, so measure before you order.
Which MBRP muffler should I pick for a quieter truck?
Start with the Quiet Tone models: the universal 4-inch and the Armor Lite 5-inch. The GP290022 Armor Plus is sold as a high-flow muffler, so expect it to sound different from the Quiet Tone units.
Is a universal muffler a bolt-on?
Not the way a kit is. A universal muffler is sized by inlet diameter rather than built for one truck, so it has to be fitted into your pipe. If you want bolt-on, MBRP's 4-inch DPF-back kit for this truck installs with no welding in about 1.5 to 2 hours.
