Call or Text (352) 722-5295Intercooler and piping on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 6.7L Powerstroke does not use a front-mount air-to-air intercooler. Its charge-air cooler is an air-to-water core mounted in the valley and cooled by the secondary, low-temperature coolant loop, which it shares with the fuel cooler and transmission cooler. Water is a far more effective working fluid than air for pulling heat out of boost. Boost leaves the turbo, a Garrett GT3788V on 2015-2016 pickups, through the hot-side tube, passes through the cooler, and returns through the cold-side tube to the intake. The factory tubes are plastic, about 2.34 inches on the hot side and 2.37 inches on the cold side.
What fails and why
The plastic tubes are the documented failure on 2011-2016 trucks. The cold-side tube cracks, and the hot-side tube can disconnect from the turbo outlet. Heat cycles and age are the cause, and failures are reported under tow and at altitude. Symptoms are a whistling boost leak, sudden power loss, codes such as P0299, P1247 and P0402, and faster soot loading in the DPF. S&B goes as far as calling the factory cold-side pipe failure prone and known to burst and leave a truck stranded.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A factory replacement tube is the same plastic part that failed. Aluminum intercooler pipe kits from S&B and Mishimoto, and steel tubes, are the documented replacements for the plastic pieces, and most of this collection is built around that swap. Put new boots and clamps on in the same job. The air-to-water intercooler kits from Mishimoto, PPE and SPE Motorsport replace the valley core itself. That is a build decision, separate from fixing a leaking tube.
What we carry
Mishimoto lists hot-side and cold-side pipe and boot kits for 2011-2016, an intercooler pipe and boot kit, the MMINT-F2D-11 air-to-water intercooler and its kit version, and a radiator and intercooler heavy-duty bundle. S&B has the 83-1000 cold-side pipe and hot-side pipes split by year. PPE offers hot-side and cold-side charge pipe kits, air-to-water intercooler kits with brushed or polished pipes and a 3-inch silicone hump coupler. SPE Motorsport carries cold-side and hot-side pipes, a compressor outlet adapter, a hot-side retainer clip and its Booklung billet intercooler. XDP has the XD305 HD intercooler pipe with billet adapter and its O-ring seal, No Limit Fabrication has turbo hose boots, BD Diesel has a charge air cooler pipe kit, and Wehrli Custom Fabrication has a hot-side intercooler pipe kit listed for 2015-2025.
Fitment notes
The hot side is where years split. S&B lists its 83-2003 hot-side pipe for 2011-2015 F-250 and F-350 only and its 83-2004 from 2016 on, while the 83-1000 cold-side pipe covers 2011-2016. The Wehrli hot-side kit starts at 2015. So a 2015 and a 2016 may take different hot-side pipes from the same maker. Cold-side parts largely carry over from 2011-2014 despite the 2015 turbo change. Many parts change for 2017 and newer trucks, so read the years on each listing. Chassis cab trucks run a different turbo than the pickups. Verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when the hot-side tube comes off the turbo?
You lose boost all at once. Expect a whistle, a sudden drop in power, and codes such as P0299, P1247 or P0402. Driving on a boost leak also loads the DPF with soot faster than normal, so get it fixed before the next long pull.
Why don't I see front-mount intercoolers for my 6.7L?
Because the factory design is an air-to-water core in the engine valley, cooled by the secondary coolant loop. Intercooler upgrades for this engine replace that valley core, like the Mishimoto, PPE and SPE Motorsport kits here, and pipe upgrades replace the hot and cold tubes around it.
Does a 2016 take the same hot-side pipe as a 2015?
Not always. S&B lists its 83-2003 hot-side pipe for 2011-2015 and its 83-2004 from 2016 on, so fitment can split between the two years. Read each listing's years before you order and verify by VIN.
Should I replace both boost tubes at once?
Both factory tubes are plastic, and both have a documented failure: the cold side cracks and the hot side pulls loose at the turbo. Mishimoto, PPE and S&B all sell both sides, so you can replace the pair in one visit instead of waiting for the second one to let go.
