Call or Text (352) 722-5295Mufflers on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
The 6.4L was the first Powerstroke with a DPF. Exhaust passes through the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and the DPF before it reaches the tailpipe section, and the DPF handles most of the sound attenuation. That's why DPF-back systems for this truck are described by pipe size rather than by muffler type. Any muffler or resonator goes in the tailpipe section behind the DPF, the same section a DPF-back system replaces. The DOC and DPF stay where they are.
When a muffler makes sense
Mufflers are not one of the 6.4L's documented trouble spots. The known exhaust problems on this engine are the manifold flanges, the up-pipe bellows and the aftertreatment. A muffler or resonator here is usually a choice rather than a repair: you're replacing a damaged section, changing how loud the truck is in the cab, or adding a resonator to a filter-back system. If you're chasing a noise, rule out the manifolds first. A tick on a cold start that fades as the engine warms points to leaking manifold gaskets, not the muffler.
Quieter vs. freer-flowing
MBRP's lineup here covers both directions. The Quiet Tone mufflers, offered in 4-inch and 5-inch, are named for the quieter side. The Armor Plus GP290022 is a 5-inch high-flow muffler. Resonators come as the Armor Lite M20681 resonator muffler and as MBRP diesel resonators in aluminized and stainless steel, and the universal 4-inch and 5-inch mufflers are 409 stainless. The Banks Power 52405 is a stainless muffler with a heat shield, 3-inch inlet by 3.5-inch outlet, listed for 1994-2010 Powerstroke trucks.
What we carry
- MBRP Quiet Tone mufflers: Armor Lite 5-inch and universal 4-inch.
- MBRP Armor Plus GP290022 5-inch high-flow muffler.
- MBRP universal 4-inch and 5-inch 409 stainless mufflers.
- MBRP M20681 Armor Lite resonator muffler and MBRP diesel resonators in aluminized and stainless steel.
- Banks Power 52405 stainless muffler with heat shield.
Options for every truck are under exhaust, and the rest of the engine is under Powerstroke parts.
Fitment notes
Most of these are universal parts, so the size has to match your pipe. MBRP builds filter-back systems for this truck in 4-inch and 5-inch, and the mufflers here come in both sizes; buy the one that matches what's on the truck. The Banks 52405 has a 3-inch inlet and a 3.5-inch outlet, so measure before you choose it. Universal mufflers install by cutting into the tailpipe section and clamping or welding, and they belong behind the DPF only. The 6.4L has no DEF system. Verify your truck by VIN or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
Will a new muffler make my 6.4L quieter?
It can, but the DPF already does most of the sound attenuation on this truck, so a muffler fine-tunes the sound rather than transforming it. If quiet is the goal, start with MBRP's Quiet Tone mufflers, offered in 4-inch and 5-inch.
Does a muffler or resonator affect my DPF or regeneration?
It sits in the tailpipe section behind the DPF, so the DOC and DPF stay in place and keep working. Regeneration happens upstream, where post-injected fuel burns in the DOC to heat the filter. If you have regeneration trouble, look at the DPF, its sensors and the DOC, not the muffler.
Should I pick a 4-inch or 5-inch muffler?
Match the pipe you have. On an MBRP 4-inch filter-back system, use a 4-inch muffler or resonator; on the 5-inch version, use a 5-inch. The universal 409 stainless mufflers and the Quiet Tone mufflers both come in each size.
