Call or Text (352) 722-5295Towing on the 2019-2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins
The 2019 redesign gave this truck a fully boxed rear frame section and an upgraded rear-axle crossmember with fifth-wheel and gooseneck provisions, plus an integrated heavy-duty receiver for bumper-pull towing. In 2019 the top rating was 35,100 lb, set by a 3500 regular cab 4x2 dually with the high-output engine and 4.10 gears, with a 43,000-lb GCWR. Ram's 2019 chart puts the Cummins 2500 at 15,520 to 19,780 lb with a 27,000-lb GCWR, and the single-rear-wheel 3500 high-output truck at up to 26,990 lb. For 2021, Ram raised the gooseneck rating to 37,100 lb, kept conventional towing at 23,000 lb on a properly equipped 3500, and integrated the fifth-wheel pucks, gooseneck plates and center casting into the box floor, with an extra 7-pin in the bed. The 2023 Rebel 2500 with the Cummins is rated at 16,870 lb.
What owners run into
Owners of 2019-2021 trucks have reported the integrated trailer brake controller intermittently failing to brake the trailer, along with 'trailer not connected' warnings and flickering lights. Those are owner complaints rather than a confirmed defect, so have the wiring and the controller checked before you start replacing parts. Two recalls on 2019-2022 trucks touch the hookup routine: 20V-207 for an accessory bed step that could fail, and 22V-904 for tailgate strikers that could let the tailgate open. Neither is a hitch failure, but you use both every time you climb into the bed to hook up a fifth wheel. And if you've lifted the truck, you'll need a drop hitch to tow level.
Factory equipment vs. aftermarket
A 2019 3500 with the Max Tow package left the factory with a 30K fifth-wheel hitch, a 4.10 rear axle, dual rear wheels, auto-leveling rear air suspension, the 5th-Wheel/Gooseneck Towing Prep Group and a trailer brake controller. If your truck wasn't built that way, the aftermarket fills the gaps: a Ram-puck fifth-wheel hitch for a prepped bed, a gooseneck hitch, a ball mount with the right drop and shank for your trailer, a weight distribution hitch for bumper-pull trailers, and on-board air with load controllers for trucks running air springs.

Fitment notes
Check four things before you order. First, look in the bed for four pucks and a 7-pin plug; that's how you know the truck has the factory prep group for puck-mount hitches. Second, note the model year, because the bed floor changed for 2021, and check it against the hitch listing. Third, find out whether the truck has factory rear air suspension. Trucks with it don't take coil-replacement helper springs, so stick to air-ride-compatible parts or let the factory auto-level do the work. Fourth, measure your receiver so the shank size matches. Then verify by VIN, or call us and we'll check it with you. Everything for this engine family starts at the Cummins hub.
Frequently asked questions
Will a fifth-wheel hitch from my old Ford or GM truck fit?
Not on the pucks. Ram's puck pattern is unique to Ram, and a Ford or GM puck hitch will not drop in. You need a Ram-specific puck hitch, like the B&W Companion RVK3670 in its Ram OEM-puck version.
How do I tell if my truck has the factory fifth-wheel and gooseneck prep?
Look for four pucks in the bed floor and a 7-pin plug inside the bed. On 2021 and later trucks with the prep, the pucks, gooseneck plates and center casting are built into the box floor. Trucks built without it can have the pucks added with a Mopar prep kit.
How much can my 2019-2024 Cummins Ram tow?
It depends on cab, axle, drive, rear wheels and engine output. In Ram's 2019 chart the Cummins 2500 runs 15,520 to 19,780 lb, the single-rear-wheel 3500 high-output truck reaches 26,990 lb, and the top 35,100-lb rating needs a 3500 regular cab 4x2 dually with the high-output engine and 4.10 gears. The best Cummins payload in that chart is 6,910 lb. Use the numbers for your exact build.
Can I add helper springs if my truck has factory rear air?
Not the coil-replacement kind. On the 2500 the factory system uses two air springs in place of the rear coils, and on the 3500 supplemental air bags assist the leaf springs. Use air-ride-compatible products or rely on the factory auto-level.
How do I pick the right ball mount drop?
The goal is a trailer that rides level. Measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, then to the bottom of the trailer coupler with the trailer sitting level; the difference is roughly the drop you need. Lifted trucks need a drop hitch to tow level, and the B&W Tow & Stow mounts here run from a 2.5-inch to a 9-inch drop.
