Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
Two different trucks carry this engine in this year range. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic are the fourth-generation DS body with the second-generation EcoDiesel. The 2020-2023 Ram 1500 is the fifth-generation DT body with the third-generation EcoDiesel. The redesigned 2019 DT was not offered with a diesel, so any 2019 EcoDiesel is a Classic. The EcoDiesel was a half-ton engine only, so everything on this page is a Ram 1500 part.
Both bodies use a short/long-arm independent front suspension and a coil-sprung solid rear axle located by links. The DT uses a five-link coil rear and weighs about 225 lb less than the DS. Both bodies could also be ordered with four-corner air suspension. On the DS, from 2013 on, that system brought automatic load leveling and adjustable ride height. On the DT, Ram calls it adaptive multi-level air suspension, with selectable modes. Whether your truck has it changes which lift and leveling hardware will bolt on.
What fails and why
Straight answer: our research did not turn up an EcoDiesel-specific coil-spring or shock failure pattern on these trucks, and we are not going to make one up. Suspension parts for the half-ton diesel are mostly bought for what the owner wants the truck to do: sit level, sit taller, or carry and tow without the rear squatting.
The one platform trait that does shape suspension choices is stance. The diesel puts extra weight on the front end, and the truck sits nose-down because of it. A leveling kit raises the nose to even that out. On the wheel-and-tire side, recall 21V698 covered 2021 Ram 1500 trucks that left the factory with the wrong-size spare tire installed. If you own a 2021, run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and make sure the spare matches.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck is stock and you only want it to sit level, a leveling kit is the smallest change you can make. On a coil-spring truck it raises the front to offset the diesel's extra weight. If you want real height, BDS lift kits run from 2 to 6 inches, and several are offered with FOX coil-overs so the shock package comes with the lift. If the truck works for a living, Air Lift helper air springs and on-board compressors add adjustable support at the rear for a trailer, a camper or a bed full of tools.
Air-ride trucks are a separate case. The factory air system already adjusts ride height on its own, and any lift or leveling parts for it have to be built for the air struts. BDS lists a 4-inch kit made for 2019-2023 EcoDiesel trucks with air ride. Do not put coil-spring parts on an air truck.
What we carry
- BDS Suspension: lift kits in 2, 3, 4 and 6-inch heights for the 2014-2018 DS and the 2019-2023 DT, with or without FOX coil-overs; a 4-inch kit for DT trucks with factory air ride; 2-inch leveling kits with FOX coil-overs; and upper control arm kits for 2-3 inch and 4-6 inch lifts.
- Daystar: a 2.5-inch leveling kit listed for 4WD EcoDiesel trucks.
- Air Lift: LoadLifter 5000 helper spring kits and Ultimate Plus stainless upgrades, WirelessONE and WirelessAIR compressor systems and tank kits, single and dual load controllers, a replacement on-board compressor, an air spring cradle, and straight and angled air spring spacers.
- Radflo: a 2.5-inch front coil-over kit and a 2.5-inch rear shock for the DS truck.
- Wehrli Custom Fabrication (WCFab): universal traction bars in 60- and 68-inch lengths, a bracket and hardware install kit, and replacement bushings and heims.
Fitment notes
Three checks settle fitment on this truck.
- Body. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic are DS; 2020-2023 trucks are DT. The two suspensions are different designs and parts do not cross between them. BDS lists its DS kits as 2014-2018 and its DT kits as 2019-2023, so a 2019 Classic owner should match parts by VIN, not by model year.
- Coil or air. Four-corner air was optional on both bodies, and air trucks take different lift and leveling hardware. Check the RPO codes on your build sheet before ordering.
- Drivetrain and trim. Most lift and leveling kits here are listed for 4WD trucks. Rebel owners (2020 and later) should know the Rebel's factory off-road setup needs matched kits. For 2023, the EcoDiesel was only sold as a Crew Cab 4x4.
Frequently asked questions
Will a lift kit from a 2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel fit my 2021?
No. The 2018 is a DS and the 2021 is a DT, and the two suspensions are different designs with no parts crossing over. Shop by body: BDS labels its DS kits 2014-2018 and its DT kits 2019-2023. The fitment checker on each product page will confirm it against your truck.
How do I tell if my Ram 1500 has the factory air suspension?
The four-corner air system was an option on both the DS and the DT, so the trim badge alone does not settle it. Pull the RPO codes from the build sheet or have a dealer read them by VIN. If you are still unsure, call us with the VIN and we will help you sort it out before you buy.
Why does my EcoDiesel sit lower in front than in back?
The diesel puts extra weight over the front axle, and that leaves the truck with a nose-down stance. It is not a sign that a spring has failed. A leveling kit made for your body and your suspension type raises the front to even it out.
What do Air Lift helper springs do on a coil-spring Ram 1500?
They add adjustable air support at the rear axle. You add pressure when the truck is loaded or hitched and let it out when it is empty. An Air Lift compressor system lets you adjust pressure without hunting for an air hose. If your truck has factory air suspension, confirm the kit's fitment against your suspension type before you order.
Do you install suspension parts?
Yes. We install everything we sell at our shop in Wildwood, FL, including lift kits, leveling kits and Air Lift systems. If you plan to do the work yourself, use the fitment checker on the product page and call us if anything does not line up with your truck.
