Exhaust from the EcoDiesel's single variable-geometry turbo passes through a diesel oxidation catalyst, a diesel particulate filter and an SCR catalyst dosed with DEF before it reaches the muffler. The muffler and any resonator are the last stop, and they shape the sound you hear. MBRP's own direct-fit system for the DS-body EcoDiesel, the S6169AL, is a single-side-exit Tour Profile layout; the parts on this page are universal and fit wherever a shop can match the pipe diameter and find room under the truck.
What fails and why
The EcoDiesel has no documented muffler problem that we can point you to. Mufflers on these trucks get replaced for ordinary reasons: physical damage, corrosion with age, or an owner who wants a different sound. Material matters for the corrosion part. 409 stainless steel holds up to rust better than aluminized steel, which is worth weighing if the truck sees salted roads or lives near the coast. Resonators usually go in alongside a muffler to take the edge off drone at highway speed.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
To replace a damaged muffler and keep things mild, look at MBRP's Quiet Tone mufflers in 4-inch and 5-inch, which are aimed at a quieter note, as the name says. The GP290022 Armor Plus 5-inch high-flow muffler and the universal 409 stainless mufflers suit owners building a larger-diameter system. Fitment notes
Universal means you match it to your truck. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe the muffler will join and pick a 4-inch or 5-inch inlet to suit; an adapter bridges a size difference. Check that the body length and diameter clear the frame, fuel tank and spare tire. The DS-body trucks (the 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic) and the 2020-2023 DT differ in wheelbase and exhaust exits, so routing differs between them. These mufflers are welded or clamped in, which makes this a job most owners hand to a shop. The EcoDiesel was offered only in the Ram 1500.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 4-inch or 5-inch muffler for my EcoDiesel?
Match the muffler to the pipe it connects to. Measure the outside diameter of your tailpipe or the pipe at the muffler location, then pick the inlet size that matches. If you are stepping up in size, the rest of the pipe has to come with it.
Will changing the muffler affect my DPF or DEF system?
No. The muffler sits behind the aftertreatment, so the DPF, SCR catalyst, DEF dosing and NOx sensors stay as Ram built them. A muffler or resonator swap changes the sound at the tail end of the system.
Should I pick 409 stainless or aluminized?
409 stainless resists rust better than aluminized steel, so it is the longer-lived choice for trucks that see road salt or coastal air. Aluminized steel works where corrosion is less of a concern. MBRP's diesel resonators come in both.
What does a resonator do?
A resonator is a smaller chamber that cancels certain sound frequencies, most often the drone you hear at steady highway speed. It works alongside the muffler, not in place of it. MBRP's M20681 Armor Lite resonator muffler and its diesel resonators are on this page.
