Call or Text (352) 722-5295Mufflers on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
The factory exhaust runs from the valley-mounted turbo through a downpipe to the DOC and DPF in the frame rail, then through the SCR catalyst with DEF injected ahead of it, and out a single tailpipe. The muffler is downstream of all of that. A DPF-back system replaces the factory muffler along with the pipe and tip, and it does not change regen behavior or DEF use. That keeps muffler work on this truck simple: it all happens after the filter.
What fails and why
The exhaust problems on record for the EcoDiesel sit upstream of the muffler: a cracked exhaust coupling on 2014-2015 4x2 trucks that could let fumes into the cab (fixed under a voluntary recall), and DPF regeneration faults. If your truck shows regen messages or the Exhaust Filter Full - Power Reduced warning, a new muffler will not fix it. Keep oil changes current, since regen is disabled when the oil change indicator reaches zero, and give the truck up to 20 minutes at highway speed when a regen is required.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
The factory muffler comes off as part of any filter-back system, so you have two ways to go. A complete kit such as MBRP's S6169AL or S6169409 replaces the muffler, pipe and tip in one bolt-on package. A universal muffler is for a custom or repaired system where you set the pipe size and layout yourself.
Material matters. In MBRP's EcoDiesel filter-back kits, Armor Lite is the aluminized version and Armor Plus is T409 stainless. The universal 4-inch and 5-inch mufflers here are 409 stainless, and the diesel resonators come in aluminized or stainless. Aluminized costs less. Stainless holds up to corrosion longer. If a quieter cab is the goal, start with the Quiet Tone models.

Fitment notes
This page is for the half-ton Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, not the Ram 2500 or 3500. Universal mufflers fit by inlet and outlet diameter, not by truck. Measure your pipe, note how much straight space you have under the truck, and match both before you order. MBRP's EcoDiesel filter-back systems are 3.5-inch single or 2.5-inch dual, sold for 2014-2018 Ram 1500 only, and some are cab and bed specific. A universal muffler means cutting and clamping or welding pipe; we install what we sell if you would rather have the shop handle it. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a universal muffler or a complete filter-back kit?
If the factory muffler and pipe are what you want to replace, a complete kit like the MBRP S6169AL is the bolt-on route, because it replaces muffler, pipe and tip together. A universal muffler makes sense for a custom or repaired system where you are setting the pipe size yourself.
Do I want a 4-inch or 5-inch muffler?
Match the muffler to the pipe you are running. MBRP's EcoDiesel filter-back systems use 3.5-inch single or 2.5-inch dual pipe, so check what is on your truck now and plan any size change before you order. The universal mufflers here come in 4-inch and 5-inch.
Will a different muffler affect regen or DEF use?
No. The muffler sits after the DPF and SCR. A DPF-back change replaces pipe and muffler after the filter and does not change regen behavior or DEF use.
