Call or Text (352) 722-5295The fuel system on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Fuel takes a simple path on these trucks. An electric lift pump in the tank pushes diesel through the filters to a Bosch CP3 high-pressure pump, which feeds a common rail and Bosch solenoid injectors at up to 26,000 psi. Every 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 uses the CP3. It runs bucket followers on a coated, non-rotating ring with lower spring tension and a shorter stroke than the CP4.2, which is why the CP3 is considered the tougher pump. The CP4.2 and its recall belong to the 2019-2020 trucks, not this generation of the 6.7L Cummins.
Filtration is where the years split. On 2010-2012 trucks the only filter is the engine-mounted one on the driver side of the block, below the brake reservoir. Starting with 2013, Ram added a second filter on the frame rail near the tank, right over the rear driveshaft. The engine filter housing carries the water separator, the drain valve and the water-in-fuel sensor. Both filters are due every 15,000 miles or 12 months, or sooner if the cluster prompts you. The engine is rated for B20 biodiesel.
What fails and why
Most fuel-system trouble on this generation shows up during service. The plastic cap on the engine-mounted filter is hard to get off and commonly cracks or strips during a filter change, and the result is a fuel leak at the housing or air in the fuel. An aftermarket intake horn or a lifted truck makes that access worse. On 2013-2018 trucks the chassis filter's steel base corrodes until it won't seal a new filter, and because it's tucked over the driveshaft, many owners skip that change entirely. Fuel weeping at the frame filter and water-in-fuel warnings are the signs.
The fuel heater connector is a recall item. NHTSA recall 14V-635 covers 2010-2014 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks built from March 27, 2009 through September 5, 2013. The connector can overheat and melt at the filter housing, which means a fuel leak and a fire risk. The remedy was a silver-plated beryllium-copper connector kit plus an inspection of the heater, replacing it if needed. Owners of 2014 trucks have also reported leaks at the heater and filter connections and some injection line failures, though those are scattered owner complaints rather than a documented pattern.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the truck is stock and you want to keep it that way, buy factory-spec parts: the right filters for your year, Cummins genuine injection lines, and remanufactured or new stock-flow CP3s and injectors. Upgrades make sense in two places. On the low-pressure side, drop-in in-tank lift pumps replace the factory module without external pumps or lines, and drop-in filter systems consolidate both factory filters into one serviceable unit at the front of the bed while keeping the factory lift pump and water-in-fuel sensor. Frame-mounted pump-and-filter systems are the other route, and a sump only comes into play with an external pump. On the high-pressure side, upgraded CP3s are drop-in replacements on 2013-2018 trucks, meant for builds beyond stock injector flow. Larger injectors should be sized to the turbo's airflow with the manufacturer's input, and a lift pump upgrade is expected alongside them.
What we carry
For filtration and supply, there are AirDog air/fuel separation systems and Raptor pumps, FASS Titanium Signature Series systems with water separator and particulate filters, BD Diesel Venom lift pumps, and the Fleece Performance Engineering SureFlo sending unit. Injectors come remanufactured from Alliant Power, XDP and BD Diesel, and as new or reman sets from Dynomite Diesel Products and Exergy Performance. High-pressure pumps include reman CP3s from Alliant Power and XDP, new and reman CP3s from Dynomite, Exergy CP3s, the Fleece PowerFlo 750 and S&S Diesel Motorsport pumps. Cummins genuine parts cover the injection lines by cylinder, a rail pressure sensor and an upper engine gasket kit. Pacific Performance Engineering supplies the Dual Fueler twin-pump kit and billet fuel caps. For the tank there are treatments from Hot Shot's Secret, Lucas Oil, Exergy and Alliant Power. Fitment notes
Year matters more than anything on this page. Fuel filters split three ways: 2007-2009, 2010-2012 (Mopar 68065608AB, Fleetguard FS43255) and 2013-2018, which add the chassis filter, Mopar 68197867AB. The 2019-and-later chassis filter is a different part. Injectors, fuel rails and rail pressure sensors also split at 2013, and many injector and contamination-kit listings split again between pickups and Cab & Chassis trucks. The 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different frames and filters, so verify those separately. CP4-to-CP3 conversion kits are for 2019-2020 trucks only; a 2010-2018 Ram already has a CP3. Fleece catalogs its PowerFlo in-tank lift pump for 2011-2024, so a 2010 truck should be checked against its pump module design. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2010-2018 Ram have the CP4 pump?
No. Every 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 left the factory with a Bosch CP3. The CP4.2 was used on 2019-2020 trucks and recalled under NHTSA 21V-880, with dealers replacing the high-pressure pump. CP4-to-CP3 conversion parts are built for those later trucks, not yours.
How often do the fuel filters need changing?
Both filters are due every 15,000 miles or 12 months, or when the cluster prompts you. On a 2013-2018 truck that means the engine filter and the frame-mounted chassis filter together. The chassis filter is awkward to reach over the driveshaft, which is exactly why it gets skipped, so put it on the list every time.
Is my truck part of the fuel heater connector recall?
Recall 14V-635 covers 2010-2014 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks built between March 27, 2009 and September 5, 2013. The connector at the fuel filter housing can overheat and melt. The fix was a silver-plated beryllium-copper connector kit and a heater inspection, so check your VIN with a dealer to see if yours was done.
Why does the engine fuel filter cap keep breaking?
The cap on the engine-mounted housing is plastic, it's hard to remove, and it commonly wears out or breaks during service. A cracked or stripped cap can leak fuel or let air into the system. Intake horns and lift kits make the job harder, so take your time and replace the cap if it shows damage.
Can I run biodiesel in my 6.7L Cummins?
The 6.7L is rated for B20, so blends up to 20 percent biodiesel are within spec. Keep the filters and the water separator on schedule, since the engine filter housing is where water is caught and drained.
