Call or Text (352) 722-5295Oil system on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Your 6.7L Cummins holds 12.0 quarts of oil with the filter. The factory recommendation for 2007.5-2018 is 15W-40 to the CJ-4 spec, switching to 5W-40 CK-4 synthetic when temperatures run below 0 F. The factory filter is Mopar 5083285AA or Fleetguard LF16035, with Fleetguard LF3972 as an alternate, and the filter must be pre-filled before installation. Change intervals split at the 2013 overhaul: 7,500 miles or 6 months on 2010-2012 trucks, and 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours on 2013-2018 trucks. 2019 and newer trucks moved to 10W-30 CK-4, so do not shop for your truck from a 2019 spec sheet. This collection also covers the oil pump, oil cooler, filter housing, pan, dipstick and the crankcase ventilation (CCV) filter.
What fails and why
The oil problem this engine is known for is fuel dilution. To regenerate the DPF, the engine post-injects fuel on the exhaust stroke, and some of it washes past the rings into the crankcase. The signs are an oil level rising between changes, thin oil and a diesel smell on the dipstick. It hits short-trip, idle-heavy trucks hardest, and it applies to every DPF year in this range. That is not a lubrication fault in itself; Ram treats up to 5% fuel in the oil as acceptable. The fix is in how you run and monitor the truck: oil analysis every 500-1,000 miles ahead of the service interval, idle kept under 10 minutes per hour, and active regens allowed to finish at highway speed.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Most of this collection is factory-equivalent service: oil, filters, gaskets, pumps and pans that match the original. Cummins genuine oil pumps, oil coolers and gaskets are the direct route when you are fixing a leak or replacing a worn part. The upgrades are small and practical, like a Mishimoto magnetic drain plug or an XDP black-phosphate oil pan bolt kit. For oil, start with the viscosity and spec your truck calls for, then choose between semi-synthetic and full synthetic based on how and where you drive.
What we carry
Hot Shot's Secret covers oil, including Green Diamond 15W-40 semi-synthetic CK-4 and Blue Diamond 5W-40 full synthetic CK-4 in gallon jugs. Lucas Oil adds 15W-40 CK-4 and synthetic 15W-40 CK-4, plus heavy-duty oil stabilizers and a zinc engine break-in additive. Cummins genuine parts include the oil pump, oil cooler, oil cooler gaskets, filter housing, pan gasket, lower engine gasket sets, the cable-style dipstick and the CCV filter gasket. Mahle supplies the OC1001 oil filter, oil cooler and oil pan gasket sets and a drain plug gasket. Dorman brings oil pans for 2010-2012 and 2013-2018 trucks plus CCV filters and covers. You will also find PPE MicroPure XR oil filters, an Alliant Power oil pump and temperature sensor, the XDP X-Factor oil additive and pan bolt kit, and a Mishimoto magnetic drain plug and replacement oil cooler.
Fitment notes
Oil pans, pan gaskets, drain plug gaskets and some lower gasket sets split at 2012/2013, and the Dorman CCV filter cover is listed for 2007.5-2011 only. The Mishimoto magnetic drain plug is listed through 2013, so check it against your year. Fluids and additives fit any of these trucks as long as the viscosity and spec match what your truck calls for. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different filters, so confirm filter fitment on a chassis cab before ordering. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins hold?
It holds 12.0 quarts with the filter, which is three of the one-gallon jugs listed here. Pre-fill the new filter before you install it.
How often should I change the oil on my 6.7L?
Ram's schedule is 7,500 miles or 6 months on 2010-2012 trucks and 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours on 2013-2018 trucks. If your truck idles a lot or makes short trips, fuel dilution is worse, and oil analysis every 500-1,000 miles ahead of the change interval tells you whether to change sooner.
Why does my dipstick read over full?
That is fuel dilution. During DPF regeneration the engine post-injects fuel, and some of it gets past the rings into the oil. Ram accepts up to 5% fuel in the oil, so a rising level is not a lubrication fault on its own. Limiting idle and letting regens finish at highway speed help keep it down.
Which oil filter fits a 2010-2018 6.7L Cummins?
The factory filter is Mopar 5083285AA or Fleetguard LF16035, with LF3972 as a listed alternate. In this collection you will find the MAHLE OC1001 and PPE MicroPure XR filters; check the fitment line on each listing for your year. Whichever you choose, pre-fill it before installation.
