Call or Text (352) 722-5295Engine parts on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins in your Ram 2500 or 3500 is a cast-iron inline six with a cast-iron head, cam-in-block overhead valves, four valves per cylinder and solid roller lifters. Bore and stroke are 4.21 x 4.88 in, and the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Standard engines run 17.2:1 compression. The 2013-2018 High Output version, offered only in the 3500 with the Aisin AS69RC automatic, runs 16.2:1. It is the same basic engine across all nine model years. The real dividing lines are the 2011 torque bump on automatic trucks, the 2013 switch to SCR/DEF with the Holset HE300VG turbo, and that High Output build. Valve lash is adjustable, and the factory schedule calls for a lash check at 150,000 miles. Oil capacity is 12.0 quarts with the filter. The change interval is 7,500 miles or 6 months on 2010-2012 trucks and 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours on 2013-2018 trucks.
What fails and why
The grid heater is the one every owner should know about. It is a resistive element in the intake manifold that warms air on cold starts and pulls up to roughly 200-225 amps through a single bolted terminal. Heat cycling, vibration and arcing can loosen that fastener until it falls into the intake. The engine sits at a 5-degree rake, so the part rolls into cylinder 6. You may get a sudden knock or loss of power, sometimes with codes P2609 or P0542, and often nothing beforehand. It has been documented as early as 40,000 miles, and Ram has issued no recall for it.
Head gaskets are the second pattern. Failure is surprisingly common on the 6.7L and happens at a higher rate than on the 5.9L, and head lift shows up most on tuned and hard-towing trucks. Watch for an upper radiator hose that is stiff and pressurized on a cold morning, overheating, or coolant pushed out of the degas bottle. The cast exhaust manifold also shrinks through heat cycles, even on stock trucks, which snaps manifold bolts and opens leaks at the head. Listen for a tick on cold start or an exhaust smell in the cab. Last, DPF regeneration post-injects fuel, and some of it washes past the rings into the oil. Ram treats up to 5% fuel in oil as acceptable, and short-trip, idle-heavy trucks get it worst.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If your truck is stock and works for a living, factory-grade gaskets, seals, oil pumps and belts put it back the way Cummins built it. The upgrade question comes up when the top end is apart. Head studs are the standard insurance on a tuned or heavy-towing 6.7L: ARP2000 or ARP Custom Age 625+, 26 fasteners, torqued 50-100-150 ft-lb in three steps, then hot re-torqued to 150 ft-lb after the first heat cycle with a valve-lash reset. For high boost, the valvetrain gets 110-lb valve springs, thick-wall chromoly pushrods and billet rocker-arm bridges. Fire-ringing the block, paired with threaded freeze plugs, is the race-level cure for head lift. For fuel dilution, the defense is oil analysis every 500-1,000 miles before the service interval, keeping idle under 10 minutes per hour and letting active regens finish at highway speed.
What we carry
Mahle supplies rear main seals, head sets and gasket sets. Cummins genuine parts include piston kits, oil pumps, rocker box housings, upper and lower gasket kits and crankshaft seals. Dorman covers oil pans, CCV filters and covers, timing case covers, fan blades, fan clutches, fan shrouds, harmonic balancers and idler pulleys. Dayco brings serpentine belts, tensioners and idlers. XDP MFG adds timing cover and oil pan bolt kits, valve springs, rocker arms and valve bridges. For the top end you will find ARP head stud kits, engine components from Hamilton Cams and Fleece Performance Engineering, and cylinder heads, short blocks, long blocks and Ready Run crate engines from D&J Precision Machine. Oil and additives come from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil, oil filters and belts from PPE, and a billet valve cover from Wehrli Custom Fabrication.
Fitment notes
Match parts by year, transmission and configuration, not just by engine size. 2010-2012 trucks run the Holset HE351VE turbo, a NOx adsorber catalyst instead of DEF, and a single engine-mounted fuel filter. 2013-2018 trucks moved to SCR/DEF and the HE300VG, so sensors, EGR plumbing and the turbo differ between the two ranges. High Output engines use 16.2:1 pistons, which means piston, short-block and some gasket part numbers differ from 68RFE and G56 trucks. Many listings here split at 2012/2013, including fan blades, fan clutches, pulley brackets, oil pans and timing covers. 2013-2018 trucks optioned with a second alternator take a different main drive belt. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different frames, filters and exhaust routing, so confirm chassis-cab fitment on its own. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Is my 2010-2018 Ram exposed to the grid heater problem?
Yes. All 6.7L trucks from 2007.5 through 2024 are exposed, which includes every 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500. Ram has issued no recall for the fastener; the 2021 grid heater relay recall covered a different fault on 2021-2022 trucks. Reports climbed as trucks passed 100,000 miles, but failures have been documented as early as 40,000.
Why is the oil level rising on my 6.7L Cummins?
That is fuel dilution. During DPF regeneration the engine post-injects fuel, and some of it washes past the rings into the crankcase. Ram accepts up to 5% fuel in the oil. Oil analysis every 500-1,000 miles ahead of the change interval, less idling and finishing regens at highway speed are the recommended defenses.
Do I need head studs on my 6.7L?
Head studs are the standard insurance for a tuned or heavy-towing 6.7L, because head gasket failure is surprisingly common on this engine. The case for studs gets stronger the more power and trailer weight you add. If you install them, plan on a hot re-torque to 150 ft-lb after the first heat cycle and a valve-lash reset.
What oil should I run in a 2010-2018 6.7L Cummins?
The factory spec for 2007.5-2018 is 15W-40 to the CJ-4 standard, or 5W-40 CK-4 synthetic below 0 F. Capacity is 12.0 quarts with the filter, and the filter should be pre-filled before it goes on. 2019 and newer trucks moved to 10W-30 CK-4, so do not shop for this truck from the 2019 spec.
Was my 2013 Ram's engine cover recalled?
Possibly. Recall 13V-122 replaced the decorative engine cover on 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks built January 7 through March 6, 2013, because it could trap enough heat to start a fire. Check your build date or run your VIN through a recall lookup.
