Call or Text (352) 722-5295Valve train on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins in your Ram is a cast-iron inline six with the camshaft in the block and an overhead-valve head carrying four valves per cylinder. A chilled ductile-iron cam drives solid roller lifters, which move the pushrods, rocker arms and valve bridges that open each pair of valves. Factory lash is 0.010 in on the intake and 0.026 in on the exhaust. Compression is 17.2:1 on trucks with the 68RFE automatic or G56 manual, and 16.2:1 on the High Output engine, which Ram offered from 2013 only in 3500s with the Aisin AS69RC six-speed.
What fails and why
The valve train is not where this generation usually gets into trouble. Cam and lifter failures do show up in 2013-2014 owner complaints, but they are isolated reports, not a pattern. The bigger risk to the parts on this page comes from the intake side. The fastener on the grid heater's high-current terminal can loosen from heat cycling, vibration and arcing, drop into the intake and, because the engine sits at a 5-degree rake, roll into cylinder 6. The result is catastrophic engine damage, often with no warning beyond a sudden knock or loss of power, and it usually means major engine work. Every 2010-2018 truck is exposed. That is when owners end up shopping pistons, rings and valves. On trucks built for high boost, the valve train is the next place builders reinforce.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If your truck runs factory power, put it back the way Cummins built it. Genuine rocker assemblies, rocker box housings and gaskets, MAHLE exhaust valves and valve stem seals, and standard-size pistons cover a stock repair. If you are building for high boost, the proven recipe is 110-lb valve springs, upgraded pushrods and billet rocker-arm bridges, and Fleece lists billet bridges for both the 2010-2012 and 2013-2018 engines. Pistons are their own decision. High Output and standard engines use different pistons, so the part number follows your transmission and HO status, not just your model year.
What we carry
- MAHLE: pistons with rings in standard and oversize (.020, .040, 0.50 mm and 1.00 mm), complete piston ring sets, exhaust valves and valve stem seal kits.
- Hamilton Cams: 103-lb and 110-lb 24-valve spring sets, tool steel retainers, high performance rocker arms, forged bridges, extreme-duty 12 mm pushrods and 178/208 and 188/220 camshaft combos.
- XDP: HD rocker arm assemblies, HD rocker arm bolts, a rocker trunnion set with polishing tool, billet valve bridges, high-boost and performance valve spring sets, street performance pushrods, and an EGT sensor for earlier trucks in this range.
- Cummins genuine: piston kit, complete rocker assembly, rocker box housing and rocker box gasket.
- Billet bridges from D&J Precision Machine and Fleece Performance Engineering.
Fitment notes
Most rockers, bridges, springs and pushrods here are listed for both 5.9L and 6.7L 24-valve engines, but read the year range on each listing; some stop at 2018 and others run into later model years. Pistons split by build. MAHLE's 224-3732WR family is listed for 2007.5-2018 and the 224-3963WR family for 2013-2018, so confirm whether your truck has the High Output engine before ordering. The XDP EGT sensor here is listed only through 2012. Any job that pulls the head should include new injector O-rings and combustion seals, and lash gets set before and again after the hot re-torque. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but differ elsewhere, so verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
When is the valve lash due on a 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L?
The factory schedule calls for a lash check at 150,000 miles on 2007.5-2018 engines, set to 0.010 in intake and 0.026 in exhaust. The 2019-and-newer engine dropped that service, so it is specific to your generation. Lash also gets reset after any head job, before and after the hot re-torque.
Do I need 110-lb valve springs?
Only if you are building for high boost. Stiffer springs, upgraded pushrods and billet bridges are the standard valve train reinforcement for a high-boost 6.7L. A truck at factory power is served by the genuine Cummins and MAHLE replacement parts, and if a turbo or fueling build is in your plans, size the valve train with it.
Which pistons fit my truck?
Start with your transmission. A 2013-2018 3500 with the Aisin six-speed has the 16.2:1 High Output engine, while 68RFE and G56 trucks run 17.2:1, and the piston part numbers differ. After that, pick standard or oversize to match what your machinist measured on the block.
