2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Transmissions & Parts

This is the transmission department for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins: pans, filters, coolers, fluid, flex plates, valve body and converter parts, and complete built units. The first thing to know is which transmission you have. These years used three different ones, and their parts do not cross.

Transmissions on the 2007.5-2009 RAM 6.7L Cummins

When the 6.7L Cummins replaced the 5.9L in mid-2007, the 2500 and 3500 pickups (still badged Dodge Ram in these years) got two new gearboxes. Automatic trucks got the Chrysler 68RFE six-speed, and with it the engine is rated 350 hp and 650 lb-ft. The 68RFE is a band-less clutch-pack design with a dual-face torque converter lockup clutch that can lock in 2nd through 6th, plus an integrated tow/haul mode. Gear ratios run 3.23, 1.84, 1.41, 1.00, 0.82 and 0.63 with a 4.44 reverse, and it takes ATF+4. Manual trucks got the Mercedes G56 six-speed: an aluminum two-piece case with an integral bellhousing, a dual-mass flywheel, a hydraulic master/slave clutch and an input rating under 700 lb-ft. Automatic 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs used a third transmission, the Aisin AS68RC.

What fails and why

On the 68RFE, the weak spots are the valve body, line pressure and converter lockup. Those are the first things to go on trucks that tow heavy or carry added power. Watch for converter shudder, slipping while locked up, burnt fluid and overdrive clutch wear. Two design traits are worth knowing: the 68RFE has no 2nd-gear prime on a downshift, and when it drops into limp mode it holds 4th gear.

On the G56, the dual-mass flywheel wears out with age, and the input shaft bearing suffers because its splash lubrication oxidizes under heat. Raise the torque and the bellhousing can crack. Clutch chatter or rattle at idle, gear noise, hard shifting and leaks at the bellhousing are the signs. The hydraulic clutch master and slave can also fail without warning: the pedal drops to the floor or goes spongy, and you cannot select a gear with the engine running.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If your truck is stock and the transmission is healthy, service is the best upgrade you can make. Both the 68RFE and the G56 call for fluid service every 120,000 miles under normal use and every 60,000 miles under severe use. On the 68RFE, that means both filters every time. The NV271 and NV273 transfer cases on 4x4 trucks have their own schedule: 60,000 miles normal, 30,000 severe.

Once you add power or tow near the limit, the 68RFE upgrade path is a re-engineered valve body, a stronger converter, a deep pan and an auxiliary cooler, or a complete built transmission that combines them. For a G56 with a tired dual-mass flywheel or added torque, the standard fix is an upgraded clutch kit, often with a single-mass flywheel conversion.

What we carry

Complete 68RFE transmissions and build kits come from BD Diesel (Roadmaster and Tow & Street units, Stage 2 through Stage 4 Build-It kits, PROTECT68 pressure control) and ATS Diesel Performance (68RFE transmission packages, Allison conversion kits and a G56 performance manual). Deep and cast aluminum 68RFE pans come from PPE, XDP, Mishimoto and Mag-Hytec, with pan gaskets from PPE and MAHLE. Coolers include Mishimoto truck-specific and universal units, BD Xtruded coolers and the Fleece cooler and line kit built for 2007.5-2009 trucks. Fluid comes from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil. You will also find XDP and BD flex plates, a DNR Customs flex plate install kit, Anchor transmission mounts and line pressure sensors.

Fitment notes

Confirm your transmission before you order. A 68RFE pickup, a G56 manual pickup and an AS68RC chassis cab do not share filters, pans, coolers or converters. The AS68RC takes Mopar ASRC or Mobil 3309 fluid and filter 68019688AA, and the 4500/5500 sits on a different chassis where most pickup parts do not interchange. Many parts here are listed for 2007.5-2018 or 2007.5-2024 because the 68RFE carried on, but some ranges are narrower, like the BD valve body listed for 2008-2010, so read the years on each product. The ATS Allison conversion kits come in 2WD and 4WD versions. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Which transmission does my 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L have?

A pickup with an automatic has the 68RFE six-speed. A truck with a clutch pedal has the G56 six-speed manual. A 3500, 4500 or 5500 chassis cab with an automatic has the Aisin AS68RC, which uses its own fluid and filter.

How often should I service the 68RFE?

Change the fluid and both filters every 120,000 miles under normal use or every 60,000 miles under severe use. It takes ATF+4. The external spin-on filter is Mopar 5015267AD and the sump filter is 5013470AE.

My 68RFE shudders when the converter locks up. What is going on?

Converter shudder, slip under lockup and burnt fluid are the classic 68RFE warning signs on trucks that tow heavy or make added power. The valve body, line pressure and converter lockup are where this transmission gives up first. Check the fluid and call the shop before it gets worse.

My G56 clutch pedal went to the floor. Is the clutch gone?

Often it is the hydraulic master and slave, which can fail suddenly at any mileage. Signs are a pedal that drops or feels spongy, a clutch that will not release, or leaks at the fittings. Mopar sells the master and slave as one pre-filled, pre-bled assembly, while aftermarket pieces need bench-bleeding.
