2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Built Transmissions

Complete transmissions for the 2007.5-2009 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins: built 68RFE automatics, transmission and converter packages, Allison conversion kits and a performance G56 manual. Know your goal before you shop. These units are aimed at trucks that tow heavy or make more power than stock, which is where a factory 68RFE gives up first.

Complete transmissions for the 2007.5-2009 RAM 6.7L Cummins

From the factory, automatic pickups behind the 6.7L Cummins got the Chrysler 68RFE, a band-less six-speed with a dual-face lockup converter that locks in 2nd through 6th. Manual trucks got the Mercedes G56 with a dual-mass flywheel and hydraulic clutch. Both transmissions carried on well past the 2009 body change, which is why most units on this page are listed for 2007.5-2018 or 2007.5-2024. A complete transmission swaps the whole gearbox at once, so you are not chasing a valve body, a converter and clutch packs one order at a time.

When a built unit makes sense

The 68RFE's weak points are the valve body, line pressure and converter lockup, and they show up first on trucks that tow heavy or carry added power. The signs are converter shudder, slip under lockup, burnt fluid and overdrive clutch wear. If your truck shows more than one, a built 68RFE addresses all of them in one job. Builders re-engineer the valve body, fit a stronger converter and add a deep pan. ATS, for example, rates its Five Star and TripleLok converters at over 1,700 lb-ft and backs its 68RFE Stage packages with a 5-year/500,000-mile warranty.

Manual trucks have a different set of limits. The G56 case is rated under 700 lb-ft, and the bellhousing can crack once torque goes up, so a performance-built G56 is the route for a manual truck that is making more power.

What we carry

  • BD Diesel 68RFE: Roadmaster and Tow & Street versions, sold as a transmission alone or paired with a torque converter.
  • ATS Diesel Performance 68RFE Transmission Package: offered for 2WD or 4WD trucks.
  • ATS Full Allison Conversion Kits: separate 2WD and 4WD listings for owners replacing the 68RFE entirely.
  • ATS G56 Performance Manual Transmission: for trucks that kept the clutch pedal.

Fitment notes

These are pickup transmissions. Chassis cabs with an automatic use the Aisin AS68RC, which shares no filters, pans, coolers or converters with the 68RFE, so nothing on this page replaces it. Match 2WD or 4WD on the ATS listings, check whether the BD unit you pick includes a converter, and read what each Allison kit includes. ATS also lists Allison conversion install and electronics kits separately in the transmission parts section. Verify by VIN before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rebuild my stock 68RFE or buy a built one?

If the truck is stock and healthy, keep it serviced: fluid and both filters every 120,000 miles under normal use or 60,000 under severe use. If it already shudders or slips under lockup and you tow heavy or run added power, a built unit with a re-engineered valve body and stronger converter fixes the parts that fail first.

Will these fit my chassis cab?

Not the automatics. A 3500, 4500 or 5500 chassis cab with an automatic has the Aisin AS68RC, a different transmission from the 68RFE. Call the shop if you have a manual chassis cab and want to talk about the G56.

Why are some BD units sold with a converter and some without?

BD lists its 68RFE units both ways. Converter lockup is one of the first places a 68RFE fails under load, so if your converter is original and the truck is getting a built transmission, a matched converter is worth considering. Read the product title to see which one you are getting.
