The turbo is only part of the job. On the 2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins, the Holset HE351CW has an oil feed line and an oil drain tube, mounts to the exhaust manifold with gaskets, and has a wastegate the ECM controls electronically to hold boost to about 30-31 psi. Downstream, factory rubber boots and clamps carry boost through the intercooler. Each of those is a part you deal with when the turbo comes off.
What fails and why
A new turbo is only as good as its install. Bearings must be pre-lubed and the drain tube fitted correctly, or the new unit fails quickly. Shaft bearings and seals also wear with age and oil quality, which shows up as oil in the intercooler piping, blue smoke, whine or shaft play. On the boost side, aging factory rubber boots, and the plastic-tank intercooler commonly reported on 2005 trucks, leak and mimic a failed turbo with low boost, high EGT and a hiss under load. Dust that slips past a bad filter or seal wears the compressor inducer, so a turbo job is a good time to check the intake side too.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock turbo swap, stick with factory-style parts: the genuine Cummins wastegate solenoid or BD wastegate control valve, the Fleece OE-replacement oil feed line and factory feed fitting, the Fleece CW drain tube kit, and the MAHLE mounting gasket set listed for 2003-2007 Cummins. If you're putting in an aftermarket S300 or S400 frame turbo, use the line and install kits made for that frame, like the G&R Diesel S300-S400 oil supply, drain and line kit or the Fleece S300-S400 installation kit for 2003-2007 5.9L trucks. Either way, leave the factory wastegate control intact; boost on these trucks is ECM-limited by design. If the turbo change is for more power, pair it with intercooler and boot upgrades and a pyrometer.

Heat and clamps: titanium turbo blankets from PPE (T4 and T6), Mishimoto and ATS; BD Marmon and exhaust V-band clamps and high-torque hose clamps; Turbosmart constant-tension clamps. Fitment notes
Read the year range on each listing. Some of these parts cover Holset-equipped 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins trucks across many years, like the Fleece feed line (1991-2018) and BD flexible drains (2003-2024). Others are cut for this truck, like the ATS harness jumper and the Mishimoto MMTB-RAM-04 blanket for 2004.5-2007. The 2003-2004 HY35W and the 2004.5-2007 HE351CW use different housings and actuators, and a 2007.5 truck with the 6.7L uses a different turbo, manifold and controls, so identify any 2007 by its engine. With an aftermarket turbo, match gaskets, fittings and blankets to that turbo's flange and frame, T4 or T6, S300 or S400. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
What should I replace along with a new turbo?
At minimum, the mounting gaskets and the oil drain tube, and plan to pre-lube the bearings. A new turbo without pre-lubed bearings and a properly fitted drain can fail quickly. An installation kit, like the Fleece CW kit for 2003-2007 5.9L trucks, groups the install parts for that turbo.
What is the boost tester for?
Finding leaks. It seals at the compressor inlet so you can pressurize the intake side and listen for escaping air. That matters on this truck because leaking boots and intercooler tanks produce low boost, high EGT and a hiss under load, the same symptoms as a bad turbo. The Holset inlet adapter is listed for 1998-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins.
Which wastegate parts fit my truck?
The genuine Cummins 4036054 wastegate solenoid and the BD 1045921 wastegate control valve are both listed for 2004.5-2007 trucks. The ECM uses this wastegate to hold boost to the stock 30-31 psi, so keep the control system intact and working. If one fails, replace it with the factory-style part.
Do I need different oil lines for an aftermarket turbo?
Match the lines to the turbo frame. G&R Diesel and Fleece both make S300-S400 specific line and install kits for the 5.9L, while the Fleece OE feed line and factory fitting are built for Holset units. BD's flexible drains come in 12-inch and 23-inch lengths for 2003-2024 Cummins.
