2003-2004 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Fuel Additives

Diesel fuel treatments for the 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins: lubricity additives, everyday conditioners, cetane boosters and winter anti-gel products. This was the first common-rail Cummins, and its CP3 and injectors run at about 23,000 psi with very tight tolerances. What goes in the tank matters, and what never goes in the tank matters more.

Fuel additives for the 2003-2004 RAM 5.9L Cummins

Lubricity is the reason additives come up at all on the 5.9L Cummins common-rail system. It runs around 23,000 psi with very tight tolerances. Ultra-low-sulfur diesel has to meet ASTM D975 lubricity, a maximum 520-micron HFRR wear scar, and even low biodiesel blends add lubricity that reduces wear in injectors and pumps. Diesel Hub lists #1 and #2 diesel as the fuel for this engine, which predates modern biodiesel blends.

What an additive can and cannot do

A bottle is not a repair. The fuel problems on these trucks come from water, dirt and rust: water in the fuel system remains a major source of problems, and rust from pitted connector tubes goes straight into the injectors. Clean fuel is what TDR ties to injector life, along with filter changes every 15,000 miles, and a treatment works alongside that, not instead of it. TDR cites ashless two-stroke oil only as a diagnostic trick for a sticking fuel control actuator, not a cure.

The real danger is home-brew additives. Used motor oil, ATF and other mouse milk have no place in common-rail fuel, because injector clearances are about 25 millionths of an inch. If it has been done, the entire system needs draining and flushing, with all filters replaced, before new injectors go in.

Choosing a treatment

Pick by the job, and let the product name be your guide. For regular fills there is Hot Shot's Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment and Lucas Oil 10003 Fuel Treatment. For lubricity specifically, look at Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme and Alliant Power LUBRIGUARD. For cold weather, choose an anti-gel product and keep an emergency product in the truck. For cetane and cleaning, Lucas Oil makes a Cetane Power Booster and Diesel Deep Clean. If you are not sure which fits how you use the truck, call us and we will talk it through.

Fitment notes

Fuel treatments are not truck-specific parts the way injectors and pumps are; they are listed here because they suit this engine's fuel system. Dose by the label and your tank size. Additives do not change the maintenance schedule: the Fleetguard FS19856 filter still gets changed every 15,000 miles or 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2003-2004 5.9L Cummins need a lubricity additive?

The CP3 and injectors run about 23,000 psi with very tight tolerances, so lubricity matters on this engine. On-spec ULSD has to meet the ASTM D975 lubricity limit, and low biodiesel blends add lubricity that reduces pump and injector wear. If you want a margin above the fuel spec, a lubricity treatment such as Hot Shot's Secret LX4 or Alliant Power LUBRIGUARD is an easy add.

Will two-stroke oil smooth out a rough idle?

TDR mentions ashless two-stroke oil only as a field test for a sticking fuel control actuator on the CP3, not as a cure. If a dose temporarily smooths out surging or a rough idle, the FCA becomes the suspect. The fix is the part, not the bottle.

Is it okay to run used motor oil or ATF in the fuel?

No. Injector clearances on this system are about 25 millionths of an inch, and TDR warns against home-brew additives in common-rail fuel. If it has already been done, drain and flush the whole fuel system and replace every filter before installing injectors.

Which products here are made for winter?

Hot Shot's Secret Winter Anti-Gel, EDT + Winter Defense and Winter Rescue Emergency, Lucas Oil 10865 Anti-Gel Cold Weather Diesel Treatment, Alliant Power WINTERGUARD, and the Exergy Performance Winter Blend in 4 oz and 16 oz. Read each label for when and how much to add.
