Call or Text (352) 722-5295Transmission parts for the 1989-1993 RAM 5.9L Cummins
Service is simple once you know which box you have. The Getrag G360 5-speed manual takes 3.5 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil and a drain and refill every 60,000 miles. The A727 3-speed automatic (1989 to mid-1991) uses ATF+4, with fluid, filter and a band adjustment every 24,000 miles or 24 months. The A518/46RH 4-speed overdrive (mid-1991 to 1993) holds 14.5 to 16.5 quarts of ATF+4. Many pan-side parts are shared across Chrysler's automatics: the MAHLE gasket on this page is listed for the 727, 518, 47RH, 47RE and 48RE pans, and several of the deep pans carry 1989-2007 fitment.
What wears out
Heat and leaks are the common thread. Factory steel cooler lines rust through and drip ATF under the passenger side, leaving the transmission low and the fluid burnt. On the A518/46RH, worn converters and clutch packs show up as slipping, a flare on the 2-3 shift, converter shudder and overheated fluid, worst on trucks that tow. A mis-set or disconnected kickdown cable causes early, soft upshifts and low line pressure that can burn the transmission up. Manual trucks wear the G360 input bearing under towing heat and slip the undersized stock clutch once fuel is added.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock truck that tows light can live on the right fluid, a fresh filter and gasket, and an auxiliary cooler. Once you tow heavy, the documented first-gen setup adds a deep pan and an under-bed cooler with a fan. When an automatic comes apart, the upgrade path runs through valve-body and service kits, a better converter and more clutch capacity. The 620,000-mile 1993 D250 that kept failing in stock form only held up after a rebuild with a low-stall converter, extra clutches in the overdrive and direct packs, a new second-gear band and a billet accumulator piston.

Fitment notes
Several parts carry narrower year ranges than the page: the BD converter is listed 1989-1993, the BD valve body 1991-1993 and the ATS valve body 1990-1993. Sellers list 727, A518 and 46RH together, but the A518 only arrived mid-1991, so confirm which automatic you have by gear count and VIN. Read fluid labels against your transmission: the automatics call for ATF+4, and the G360 spec is motor oil, not ATF or gear oil. The Hot Shot's Secret G56 Severe Duty fluid is named for the G56, which only belongs in a first gen that has been converted.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I service a first-gen automatic?
For the A727, the schedule is fluid, filter and a band adjustment every 24,000 miles or 24 months, using ATF+4. The A518/46RH also takes ATF+4 and holds 14.5 to 16.5 quarts. If the fluid comes out burnt, find the reason, such as leaking steel cooler lines or a slipping converter, before you refill and drive on.
Do I need a deep pan?
If you tow with an automatic, a deep pan is part of the documented first-gen setup along with an auxiliary cooler. A deeper pan carries more fluid. Check the fitment listing on each pan; several here are listed for 1989-2007 5.9L trucks.
Which valve body do I need?
The BD valve body is listed for 1991-1993 Cummins trucks and the ATS A618 towing valve body for 1990-1993. Both line up with the later first-gen years, but sellers group 727, A518 and 46RH parts together, so confirm whether your truck has the 3-speed or the 4-speed before you order. If shifts are early and soft, check the kickdown cable before replacing the valve body.
Can I run the G56 fluid in my G360?
Not as a substitute for the spec. The G360 calls for 3.5 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil, and many towing owners run 15W-40 with an extra quart. The Hot Shot's Secret G56 Severe Duty SAE 50 fluid is named for the G56, a custom conversion on some built first gens.
