1989-1993 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Transmission Pans

Transmission pans, gaskets and drain hardware for the 1989-1993 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins with an automatic. A deep pan adds fluid capacity to the A727 or A518/46RH, and deep pans plus added cooling are the documented upgrades for first gens that tow. Confirm which automatic you have first; the two are different units.

Transmission pans for the 1989-1993 Ram 5.9L Cummins

The automatic behind a first-gen Cummins is either the A727 TorqueFlite three-speed, used from 1989 into 1991, or the A518 four-speed overdrive that took over in mid-1991 and became the 46RH under Chrysler's 1992 naming. Both take ATF+4. The A518 holds 14.5-16.5 qt. The A727 schedule calls for fluid, filter and band adjustment every 24,000 miles or 24 months, so its pan comes off on a regular basis. Heat is the thing to manage: overheating fluid is one of the warning signs on a Cummins-backed A518, and it gets worse with towing. Deep pans and auxiliary cooling are the documented answer for first gens that pull a trailer.

What we carry

  • Deep pans: the PPE deep transmission pan, listed for 1989-2009 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins; the Mag-Hytec 727-D deep pan; the BD Diesel 1061501 deep sump pan; and the XDP XD450 Xtra Deep aluminum pan, listed as a 47/48RE pan for 1989-2007 5.9L Cummins.
  • Gasket: the Mahle W39003TC pan gasket, listed for 727, 518, 47RE, 47RH and 48RE transmissions.
  • Drain plug: the ATS Diesel Performance 402-009-1000 drain plug, made for ATS pans and differential covers.

Fitment notes

Parts sellers lump the 727, A518 and 46RH together for 1989-1993, but the units differ. Read each pan's listing against your transmission, not just your model year. The ATS drain plug is listed for ATS pans and covers, so do not count on it for another brand's pan. These pans are for automatics only; the Getrag G360 five-speed manual runs on motor oil and does not use them.

Frequently asked questions

Will these deep pans fit both the A727 and the A518?

The Mahle gasket here is listed for the 727, 518, 47RE, 47RH and 48RE, and the pans are listed for 5.9L Cummins trucks starting in 1989. The 727 and A518 are still different transmissions, so confirm yours against each pan's fitment list or call the shop before you order.

What fluid and service schedule does a first-gen automatic need?

Both the A727 and the A518/46RH take ATF+4. The A727 schedule is fluid, filter and band adjustment every 24,000 miles or 24 months. The A518 holds 14.5-16.5 qt in total and a deeper pan adds to that, so check the level carefully after a pan swap.
