Call or Text (352) 722-52956R140 coolers and controls on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 6R140 behind the 6.7L Powerstroke is rated for 1,400 lb-ft of input and is considered durable at stock power. Its weak spots are heat, the torque converter clutch and the valve body. Heavy towing pushes fluid temperature up because stock cooling is limited and converter slip adds heat; the result is over-temp warnings, a burnt fluid smell and limp mode on grades. Valve body bore wear and sticking solenoids bring harsh or erratic shifts, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse and codes P0776 and P2701, usually at high mileage. Bore repairs and solenoid replacement are the usual fix.
Direct-fit vs. universal coolers
The direct-fit upgrade for these years is an auxiliary cooler plumbed in series with the stock liquid-to-liquid cooler, such as Mishimoto's 2017-2019 kit. The Mishimoto MMTC-F2D-17SL and SPE S100359 are both listed specifically for 2017-2019 6.7L trucks. Universal coolers from Mishimoto and BD Diesel give you more choice in size and style, including fan-equipped and double-stacked designs, but you plan the mounting and plumbing yourself. BD's 1030607 is a universal electric fan for transmission coolers.
What we carry
- Direct-fit coolers: Mishimoto MMTC-F2D-17SL and SPE Motorsport S100359, both for 2017-2019.
- Universal coolers: Mishimoto MMTC-TF series, MMTC-SP-13, MMTC-U transmission and power steering cooler, MMOC-F with fan and MMOC-OO-17/MMOC-SSO-17 heavy-duty fluid cooler; BD Diesel Xtruded auxiliary and double-stacked coolers and the 1030607 electric cooler fan.
- Valve body and pressure control: SPE S100128 6R140 solenoid body, BD 1031320 6R140 pressure controller, BD 1031319 pressure controller LED kit and BD 1030385 pressure enhancer solenoid.
- Other: BD 1062501 interlocking pressure plate kit, SPE S100223 6R140 line kit, the ATS Diesel Performance 601-900-3368 6R140 Co-Pilot Tow Edition and the MAHLE B33590 transfer case gasket.
Fitment notes
Many 6R140 parts list 2011-2019 because the transmission carried over, while the direct-fit coolers list 2017-2019 only. The MAHLE B33590 transfer case gasket lists 1999-2017, so 2018-2019 owners should verify it by VIN. Many transmission parts do not carry over to 2020-up trucks, which use the 10R140 10-speed. Universal coolers and fans fit by size, so measure your mounting space before ordering. Use the fitment checker on any product page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a direct-fit cooler, or will a universal one work?
Either can work. The Mishimoto and SPE direct-fit coolers are listed for 2017-2019 and made for this truck, which keeps the install simple. A universal cooler gives you more size options but leaves the mounting and line routing to you. Either way, an auxiliary cooler in series with the stock cooler is the upgrade for sustained towing.
What does a solenoid body fix on a 6R140?
Sticking solenoids are part of the valve body wear problem on high-mileage 6R140s, with harsh or erratic shifts, delayed engagement and codes P0776 and P2701. Solenoid replacement, along with bore repairs, is the usual fix, and the SPE S100128 solenoid body is listed for 2011-2019 6R140s. Diagnose first, because TCM and solenoid-pack electrical faults can also cause erratic shifts and limp mode.
Does the MAHLE transfer case gasket fit a 2018 or 2019?
Its listing covers 1999-2017 Powerstroke trucks, so for a 2018 or 2019 confirm by VIN with the fitment checker or call the shop before you order. On 4x4 trucks the transfer case is filled with MERCON LV, about 1.9 to 2.0 quarts, so have fluid on hand for the job.
