Call or Text (352) 722-5295The 6R140 TorqShift on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford put one transmission behind the 6.7L Powerstroke for these years, in pickups and chassis cabs alike: the 6R140 TorqShift 6-speed. It has an aluminum case and sinter-brazed Ravigneaux planetaries, weighs about 325 pounds dry and is built at Ford's Sharonville, Ohio plant. Gear ratios are 3.97, 2.31, 1.51, 1.14, 0.85 and 0.67, with a 3.12 reverse. You get SelectShift manual mode, Tow/Haul, progressive range select and converter lockup down to about 900 rpm. The high-capacity torque converter Ford introduced for 2015 carries into 2017-2019. The transmission is rated for 1,400 lb-ft of input torque, comfortably above the 925 lb-ft of the 2017 pickup and the 935 lb-ft of the 2018-2019 pickup. Diesel trucks also get the Live-Drive PTO provision, with a driver-side port and both stationary and mobile modes.
What fails and why
At stock power the 6R140 is considered a durable transmission. Owner complaints center on the converter, the valve body and heat.
- Torque converter clutch wear. Shudder or vibration at a steady cruise, rpm flare under load and lazy lockup. It shows up on higher-mileage trucks and is worst on tuned or heavily loaded ones.
- Valve body bore wear and sticking solenoids. Harsh or erratic shifts, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, and codes P0776 and P2701, usually at high mileage. Bore repairs and solenoid replacement are the usual fix.
- Overheating under heavy towing. Limited stock cooling plus converter slip lets fluid temperature climb. Watch for trans over-temp warnings, a burnt fluid smell and limp mode on grades.
- TCM and solenoid-pack electrical faults. Erratic shift timing, limp mode that keeps coming back and a Service Transmission message. These can turn up at any mileage.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If your truck is stock and tows now and then, factory-spec service is the right call: MERCON LV fluid, a fresh filter (Ford's part is the Motorcraft FT187) and a new pan gasket, on the published 150,000-mile fluid and filter interval. If you pull heavy trailers for long stretches, cooling is the first upgrade to look at. An auxiliary cooler plumbed in series with the stock liquid-to-liquid cooler, like Mishimoto's 2017-2019 kit, adds capacity right where this transmission runs into trouble. Deep pans, pressure controllers, valve-body parts and a stronger torque converter follow for trucks that work harder. A complete built transmission and converter package is the answer when the factory unit is worn out and you want the replacement built for the way you use the truck.

Fitment notes
The 6R140 sits behind every 2017-2019 6.7L, but that doesn't mean every part fits every truck. Many listings here run 2011-2019 because the transmission carried over from earlier years, while the direct-fit coolers and the BD complete packages are specific to 2017-2019. Many transmission parts do not carry over to 2020-up trucks, which switched to the 10R140 10-speed and MERCON ULV fluid. The ATS complete packages come in separate 2WD and 4WD versions, so match your drivetrain. Chassis cab F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks run a different 6.7L calibration and many of their parts differ from pickups, so read the listing before you buy. On 4x4 trucks the transfer case also takes MERCON LV, about 1.9 to 2.0 quarts. When in doubt, verify by VIN with the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
What transmission fluid does a 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke take?
The 6R140 takes MERCON LV. The 10R140 in 2020 and newer Super Duty trucks uses MERCON ULV, and the two should not be crossed. In this collection, Motorcraft XT10QLVC and Hot Shot's Secret Blue Diamond Dexron VI & Mercon LV are labeled for the LV spec. Published capacity figures run about 17.4 to 18.5 quarts.
Why does my Super Duty shudder at highway cruise?
Shudder or vibration at a steady cruise, along with rpm flare under load and lazy lockup, points toward torque converter clutch wear. It is most common on higher-mileage trucks and on tuned or heavily loaded ones. The BD Proforce 4D converter here is built for the 6R140. Get a diagnosis first so you are not replacing a converter to cure a valve-body problem.
What do codes P0776 and P2701 mean on a 6R140?
On this transmission those codes go with valve body bore wear and sticking solenoids, usually at high mileage. You will typically feel harsh or erratic shifts and delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse. Bore repairs and solenoid replacement are the usual fix, and the SPE solenoid body in this collection is made for the 6R140.
Do I need an auxiliary transmission cooler for towing?
If you tow heavy for long stretches, it is worth a look. The 6R140 can overheat under heavy towing because stock cooling is limited and converter slip adds heat; the signs are over-temp warnings, a burnt fluid smell and limp mode on grades. An auxiliary cooler run in series with the factory liquid-to-liquid cooler, like the Mishimoto 2017-2019 kit, is the direct upgrade for this truck.
My truck shifts firm after a dealer software update. Is that normal?
If the dealer performed Ford's TSB 18-2278 PCM reflash, yes. That reflash resets the adaptive shift strategy, and firmer shifts for several days afterward are normal. If harsh shifts hang on well past that, have the transmission checked.
