Every 2011-2016 6.7L Powerstroke uses the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump. Inside it, roller followers ride on a cam, and the only lubrication they get comes from the fuel. When lubricity is low, the rollers can skate on the cam and shed fine metal that travels to the injectors, rails, lines, lift pump and tank. That is why Diesel Hub's CP4 guidance is to start an additive regimen at every fill-up to raise lubricity, and to add anti-gel in cold weather. Running the tank low hurts too, since the pump depends on fuel for lubrication. Ford specs ultra-low-sulfur diesel and allows biodiesel up to B20, and Ford's own 2024 CP4 analysis blamed aged biodiesel deposits in the pump's roller parts. The rest of this engine's parts are on the Powerstroke hub.
What an additive can and cannot do
A lubricity treatment at every fill is one layer of protection. It works alongside the other habits this engine rewards: change both fuel filters on Ford's schedule (22,500 miles normal, 15,000 miles or 6 months severe), never run the tank low, and let the lift pump run 5-10 seconds after the wait-to-start light before cranking. What an additive will not do is fix a pump that is already shedding metal. Once a CP4.2 fails, the injectors, rails, lines, lift pump, filters and tank have to be replaced or cleaned, and no bottle changes that.
What we carry
From Hot Shot's Secret: Everyday Diesel Treatment, Diesel Extreme, LX4 Lubricity Extreme, EDT + Winter Defense, Diesel Winter Anti-Gel and the Diesel Winter Rescue emergency formula. From Alliant Power: LUBRIGUARD, ULTRAGUARD and WINTERGUARD diesel fuel treatments. From Lucas Oil: the 10003 Fuel Treatment, 10865 Anti-Gel Cold Weather Diesel Treatment, Diesel Deep Clean and Cetane Power Booster. Exergy Performance diesel additive comes in 4 oz and 16 oz bottles, in standard and winter blend, with case-of-12 options if you run more than one truck. Also in this collection: XDP Diesel Power Plus in a 16 oz bottle and the Merchant Automotive 10508 Diesel Fuel Additive. The full fuel additives category has more.
How to choose
Start with the job. For year-round CP4 protection, pick a product built around lubricity, such as Hot Shot's Secret LX4, Alliant LUBRIGUARD or an everyday treatment, and use it at every fill. If your truck sees cold weather, add an anti-gel or switch to a winter blend for the season, and consider keeping an emergency product like Winter Rescue in the truck when you travel. Then dose by your tank. Diesel F-250 and F-350 trucks on 137, 142 and 156-inch wheelbases carry 26 gallons; 158 and 172-inch trucks and every F-450 carry 37.5 gallons. Follow the treat rate on the bottle for your tank size.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need an additive at every fill on a 2015 or 2016 6.7L?
Diesel Hub's CP4 guidance says yes: start a regimen at every fill-up to raise lubricity. The CP4.2 is lubricated by the fuel itself, and low lubricity is what lets its roller followers skate and shed metal. Treat it as routine maintenance, alongside filter changes.
Which additive should I use when it gets cold?
Use an anti-gel in cold weather on top of your everyday lubricity treatment. In this collection that means Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Winter Anti-Gel or EDT + Winter Defense, Lucas Oil 10865 Anti-Gel, Alliant WINTERGUARD or the Exergy winter blend. Hot Shot's Secret Winter Rescue is sold as an emergency product.
Can I run biodiesel in my 6.7L Powerstroke?
Ford allows blends up to B20. Running biodiesel puts you on the severe-service fuel filter interval of 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 hours, and Ford's own 2024 CP4 analysis pointed at aged biodiesel deposits in the pump's roller parts. If you run blends, buy fresh fuel and keep the filters current.
Will an additive save a pump that is already failing?
No. Once a CP4.2 sheds metal, the debris reaches the injectors, rails, lines, lift pump and tank, and all of it has to be replaced or cleaned. Additives are prevention. If you have found metal in your fuel filter, call the shop before you buy anything.
