Call or Text (352) 722-5295Differentials on the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford built these Super Duty pickups around three differentials. The Sterling 10.5 (35-spline) rear sits under the F-250 and SRW F-350, sold as a conventional diff, a limited-slip, or the electronic locker that debuted for 2011 on 4x4 trucks. The Dana 80 carries the F-350 dually and the 2011-2014 F-450 pickup. On four-wheel-drive trucks, the Dana Super 60 handles the front. Behind the 6.7L Powerstroke, ratio is the other half of the story: 3.31 and 3.55 on SRW trucks, 3.73 on duallies and 4.30 on the F-450. The ratio sets the GCWR and tow rating, from 23,500 lb on a 3.31 or 3.55 SRW truck up to 33,000 lb on a 4.30 F-450 in Ford's 2014 towing guide.
What fails and why
Inside the housing, gear oil does all the work. Let it go past its service life and the Sterling 10.5 is the axle that pays, especially behind a trailer. The warning signs are gear whine and, on limited-slip units, clutch chatter. Rear fluid is on a 100,000-mile normal and 50,000-mile severe schedule. A fluid change means pulling the cover, which is why gaskets and gear oil live on the same page as the covers.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock-style service is a MAHLE gasket, the right grade of gear oil and, if your axle's spec calls for it, Motorcraft XL-3 Additive Friction Modifier. Step up to an aftermarket cover from PPE, Mag-Hytec, SPE Motorsport, BD Diesel or AFE if the factory cover is damaged or you prefer a heavy-duty cast aluminum part. For traction, the SPE Motorsport Full Lock Differential Kit is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks.
What we carry
Covers come from PPE (Sterling 12-bolt rear and Dana 50/60 10-bolt front), Mag-Hytec (F12-10.25 and 10.5, Dana 80 and 60-FF front), SPE Motorsport (Sterling SRW rear and Dana 60 front), BD Diesel and AFE. Cover gaskets are from MAHLE. Gear oil comes from Lucas Oil, Hot Shot's Secret and Royal Purple, alongside Motorcraft XL-3 and an ATS Diesel Performance drain plug for ATS covers.
Fitment notes
The SPE Motorsport and BD Diesel Sterling covers are listed for SRW trucks only. The Mag-Hytec Dana 80 cover is listed for the F-350. Do not carry Dana 80 parts over to a 2015-2016 F-450 pickup or any F-450 chassis cab; those use the Dana S110. A 4x2 truck has no front differential, since it uses Twin-I-Beam front suspension. Confirm your axle by VIN before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Sterling 10.5 cover fit my F-350 dually?
No. F-350 dually trucks use a Dana 80 rear, not the Sterling. Look for a Dana 80 cover such as the Mag-Hytec 80, and match the gasket to that axle.
Does my axle ratio change which cover or gasket I need?
The covers and gaskets here are listed by axle, not by ratio. Ratio matters for towing: it sets your GCWR, and these trucks were built with 3.31, 3.55, 3.73 or 4.30 gears. Pick parts by axle, and check the ratio when you are sizing a trailer.
Do I need friction modifier when I change the rear fluid?
Add it only if your axle's service spec lists it, so check the owner's manual first. Motorcraft XL-3 Additive Friction Modifier is the one on this page. Limited-slip axles are the ones that chatter when their fluid is worn out, so owners of those trucks should pay the closest attention to the spec.
