Call or Text (352) 722-5295Differential fluid for the 2011-2014 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Behind the 6.7L Powerstroke, the rear axle is either a Sterling 10.5 (F-250 and SRW F-350) or a Dana 80 (F-350 dually and 2011-2014 F-450 pickup). Diesel Hub lists about 3.3 to 3.6 quarts of 75W-140 synthetic for the rear and notes that capacity varies by axle. On 4x4 trucks, the front Super 60 holds about 2.7 to 2.9 quarts of 80W-90. The rear fluid interval is 100,000 miles normal and 50,000 miles severe. Skipping it is the main driver of Sterling 10.5 wear on towing trucks, and the symptoms are whine and, on limited-slips, clutch chatter.

Choosing the right bottle
Grade comes first, brand second. The 75W-90, 80W-110 and 85W-140 grades on this page do not match the published numbers for these axles, so use them only when your owner's manual or axle builder calls for them. Buy enough to cover your axle's real capacity, since it varies by axle, and add Motorcraft XL-3 only where your service spec lists a friction modifier. Verify your axle by VIN if you are not sure which one you have.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run 85W-140 or 80W-110 in the rear axle?
Published service data lists 75W-140 synthetic for the rear on these trucks. The heavier grades are here for other applications and for owners whose axle builder specifies them. If nobody has told you otherwise, stay with 75W-140 synthetic.
How much gear oil do I need for both axles?
Plan on about 3.3 to 3.6 quarts for the rear and 2.7 to 2.9 quarts for the front on a 4x4, keeping in mind that rear capacity varies by axle. Check the bottle size on each listing. A spare quart on the shelf beats coming up short with the cover off.
How often should the rear gear oil be changed?
Every 100,000 miles under normal use and every 50,000 miles under severe service. Towing trucks that miss it are the ones that wear out the Sterling 10.5.
