The K16 on the 6.4L Powerstroke is a three-piston rotary pump driven off the rear gear train, building rail pressure as high as 24,650 psi. It has no internal bypass and relies entirely on fuel lubricity, and the piezo injectors it feeds are intolerant of water and debris. That puts fuel quality at the top of the maintenance list on this engine. The preventive logic is simple: clean fuel plus a lubricity additive. Ford also built a thermo recirculation module into the HFCM on the frame rail that routes return fuel back into the filter below 80 F, fully open at 50 F.
What you are protecting
No additive fixes a failed part, so it helps to know what is at stake. Piezo injectors fail from contaminants and internal leakage, including varnish that causes stiction, and that failure pattern follows fuel quality and water-separator neglect. Symptoms include hard starts, rough idle, misfire, a fuel smell in the oil, a rising oil level and frequent regens. On the pump side, reduced lubricity is cited as a contributor to K16 wear, and a failed K16 contaminates the rails, lines and injectors, so replacing the pump alone invites a repeat failure. Fuel choice reaches the exhaust side too: run only ULSD with CJ-4 low-ash oil, because other fuels and oils load the DPF with ash.
How to choose a treatment
Sort additives by the job. Lubricity treatment is the one tied directly to the K16, since the pump depends on the fuel for lubrication. Cetane boosters and cleaners are about combustion and deposits. Anti-gel and winter formulas are for cold snaps. Whatever you pick, a bottle supplements the basics rather than replacing them: drain the HFCM water separator every one to two weeks and change both filters on schedule, which is the single most effective K16 insurance. Ford's schedule treats any biodiesel use as severe duty, so confirm the blend limit in your owner's guide before you run any.

Using additives on a 6.4L
Additives are not tied to a VIN the way hard parts are, so the fitment question is really about use. Follow the dose on the label for your tank size. Run ULSD only, and pair it with CJ-4 low-ash oil. If the truck is throwing water-in-fuel warnings or a P2269 code, fix the HFCM drain and filters first; that is a hardware problem. And if you see white crystalline residue in the filter bowl, stop: it points to diesel exhaust fluid in the fuel, and the whole system is condemned.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 6.4L really need a lubricity additive?
That is the preventive logic for this engine. The K16 relies completely on diesel for lubrication, and the reduced lubricity of ULSD is cited as a contributor to K16 wear. Products named for that job here include Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme and Alliant Power LUBRIGUARD.
Can I run biodiesel in my 6.4L?
Check the blend limit in your owner's guide first. Ford's schedule treats any biodiesel use as severe duty, which moves filter changes to every 10,000 miles or 400 hours instead of 20,000 miles or 24 months. For the DPF's sake, the guidance for this engine is ULSD with CJ-4 low-ash oil.
Will an additive take care of water in my fuel?
Treat water as a hardware job first. The HFCM separator does that work, and its drain needs opening every one to two weeks. If the drain is plugged with white, grease-like sludge, water is already getting through to the K16 and injectors, and the fix is draining and servicing the HFCM, not a bottle.
What should I run in winter?
An anti-gel or winter formula: Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Winter Anti-Gel or EDT + Winter Defense, Lucas Oil 10865 Anti-Gel, Alliant Power WINTERGUARD or the Exergy Performance Winter Blend. Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Winter Rescue Emergency is the one named for emergencies. On the hardware side, the HFCM's thermo recirculation module sends return fuel back into the filter below 80 F and is fully open at 50 F.
