Each bank has its own cast manifold. The driver side feeds the Duramax variable-vane turbo directly, while the passenger side crosses the engine valley through an up-pipe with a flex bellows in the middle to absorb engine-to-turbo movement. From the turbo, gas passes through a downpipe, then the diesel oxidation catalyst and the diesel particulate filter, then the tailpipe. GM used aluminized stainless from the factory. There is no DEF or SCR on this engine and no factory exhaust brake; soot is handled by the DPF, which the ECM cleans using late post-injection after the power stroke. That is the regen you feel.
What fails and why
The passenger-side up-pipe bellows is the signature failure. It is thin stainless absorbing every bit of thermal movement between engine and turbo, and it cracks on heat cycles rather than at a published mileage. You get a metallic screech or tick under load, soft boost and drive pressure, higher EGT, soot streaks on the firewall and sometimes exhaust smell in the cab. Cracked manifolds, loose flanges and flattened gaskets leak the same way at any age and get blamed on the turbo. The DPF is the other half of the story: short trips, long idling and heavy towing interrupt regens, soot builds, and ash never burns off, so the filter eventually needs cleaning or replacement. Watch for repeat regens, a clean-exhaust-filter message, code P2463 and reduced power. Upstream leaks commonly skew the DPF pressure and temperature sensors and add regens you did not need.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If you are chasing a leak, OEM-length up-pipes and fresh manifold gaskets put the truck back to stock, and that is often enough. The upgrade that earns its keep here is a heavy-gauge stainless up-pipe with a welded convolute or interlocking-mesh bellows, sold for the passenger side, the driver side or as a pair across 2001-2016 Duramax engines. Manifold kits with upgraded gaskets handle the other end of the same problem. Downstream, a 3 in stainless downpipe and a DPF-back exhaust system with a high-flow muffler and a tip are the compliant choices, because the oxidation catalyst and particulate filter stay on the truck and keep doing their job. Before you buy a filter, finish a full regen with highway miles, repair leaks, verify the sensors and keep low-ash oil in it.
What we carry
PPE covers the hot side with OEM-length and high-flow up-pipe kits, high-flow manifolds, a 3 in stainless downpipe, support brackets, flange gaskets, heat shields and stainless tips, plus a filter-back system. MBRP brings downpipes, resonators, high-flow mufflers and tips. Wehrli Custom Fabrication builds billet exhaust manifolds and down pipes, and BD Diesel supplies exhaust brakes. Gaskets, fasteners and sensors come from Mahle, Merchant Automotive, Dorman, ARP, Gator Fasteners, Alliant Power and XDP, with heat wrap and a polished tip from Mishimoto.
Fitment notes
Exhaust is cut to the truck, so box and wheelbase matter: regular cab long box, extended cab with either box and crew cab with either box span 133 to 167 in of wheelbase, and 3500HD trucks came single or dual rear wheel. The 3 in downpipe sold for the 2011-2015.5 LML does not fit an LMM. Up-pipe kits that list 2001-2016 pickups exclude the LGH Express and Savana van engine. Aftermarket up-pipe bolts are often undersized for the flange holes, so plan on reusing the factory hardware. Aftermarket 3 in systems join the front pipe with a V-band clamp. Remember that the 2007 Classic HD is the older body with the LBZ, not this truck, so verify your VIN with the fitment checker on any product page.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Silverado regenerate so often?
Short trips, long idle time and heavy towing interrupt regens before they finish, so the ECM keeps starting over and soot keeps building. An upstream exhaust leak can also skew what the DPF sensors read. Run a complete regen out on the highway, repair leaks and check the sensors before condemning the filter.
Is a DPF-back exhaust system fine on an LMM Silverado?
Yes. DPF-back means the pipe, muffler and tip behind the filter outlet, with the oxidation catalyst and particulate filter left exactly where GM put them. That is the compliant way to change tone and looks on this truck. A muffler and tip swap is the same idea on a smaller scale.
What is the screech I hear under load?
On an LMM that noise usually comes from the passenger-side up-pipe bellows or a cracked manifold flange leaking ahead of the turbo. Look for soot tracks at the joint and soft boost with rising EGT. It is a leak far more often than it is a turbo.
What else should I order with up-pipes?
Add the manifold-to-up-pipe and up-pipe-to-EGR-cooler gaskets, and keep your OEM flange bolts rather than the aftermarket ones in the box. Heat shields and manifold gaskets are worth replacing while everything is already off the truck, since access is the hard part of this job.
