2007.5-2010 Chevy Duramax LMM Up-Pipes

Up-pipes, exhaust manifolds, gaskets and bolts for the 2007.5-2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD with the LMM Duramax. The part to watch is the passenger-side up-pipe. Cracking in its flex bellows is the signature LMM exhaust failure, and the leak costs boost, raises exhaust temperature and can trigger extra DPF regens.

Up-pipes on the 2007.5-2010 Chevrolet LMM

Each bank of the LMM Duramax has its own cast exhaust manifold, and the passenger side crosses over to the Garrett variable-vane turbo through an up-pipe with a flex bellows section. From the turbo, exhaust runs through the downpipe, the diesel oxidation catalyst and the diesel particulate filter. The LMM has no DEF system. Up-pipes and manifolds sit ahead of the turbo, upstream of all the aftertreatment, so replacing them leaves the factory DOC and DPF in place.

What fails and why

Passenger-side bellows cracking is the signature LMM exhaust failure and the most common exhaust complaint across 2001-2016 Duramax trucks. It is tied to age and heat cycles, and no mileage threshold has been published. Watch for a metallic tick or screech under load, lost boost, higher exhaust gas temperatures, soot streaks on the firewall and exhaust smell in the cab. Cracked manifolds, loose flanges and dead gaskets cause the same kind of upstream leak, slow turbo spool, and often get misdiagnosed as turbo trouble. A leak can also confuse the DPF pressure and temperature sensors and bring on extra regens and poor fuel economy, so fix exhaust leaks and verify the sensors before anyone condemns your DPF.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If only the passenger pipe is cracked and the manifolds are sound, a direct replacement pipe made to bolt to the factory manifold is the simple fix. The aftermarket answer to the failure-prone factory flex joint is a heavy-gauge stainless up-pipe with a welded bellows, so check how each pipe's flex section is built on its product page. If the manifolds are cracked or the flanges won't seal, replace manifolds and pipes together so you aren't chasing the next leak. Whatever you choose, put in fresh gaskets, because a dead gasket leaks just like a cracked pipe.

What we carry

  • Pipes and manifolds from Pacific Performance Engineering (PPE): the 116120916 passenger-side replacement up-pipe for the OEM manifold, the 116120710 OEM-length high-flow up-pipe kit, and the 116111800 high-flow exhaust manifolds with up-pipes.
  • Gaskets: the PPE 118062030 manifold-to-up-pipe gasket set and 118075008 up-pipe-to-EGR-cooler gasket, plus MAHLE F31903 manifold-to-up-pipe and F32918 up-pipe-to-turbo gaskets.
  • Bolts: the PPE 116121500 up-pipe bolt set, the Gator Fasteners UPBK66 heavy-duty up-pipe bolt kit, and ARP 672-1003 chromoly bolts in M10 x 1.50 x 30.

Fitment notes

These parts are for Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD pickups with the LMM, WT through LTZ, on the GMT900 body from mid-2007 through 2010. The pipes, manifolds and EGR cooler gasket are listed for 2007.5-2010 specifically, while the other gaskets and bolts carry wider 2001-2016 Duramax listings. Up-pipe kits are not made for the LGH engine in Express and Savana vans. One up-pipe maker warns that some aftermarket up-pipe bolts are undersized for the flange holes, so compare new bolts to the flange before you install, and reuse the factory hardware if they don't fit right. Downpipe-back parts are in our exhaust collection. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my up-pipe is cracked?

Listen for a metallic tick or screech under load and look for soot streaks on the firewall. A cracked pipe also costs boost, raises exhaust gas temperature and can put exhaust smell in the cab. The passenger-side bellows is the usual spot.

Can an up-pipe leak cause extra DPF regens?

It can. Exhaust leaks confuse the DPF pressure and temperature sensors, which can trigger more frequent regens and hurt fuel economy. Fix leaks and verify the sensors before replacing a DPF.

My Silverado spools slow. Is the turbo bad?

Not necessarily. Cracked manifolds, loose flanges and dead gaskets cause upstream leaks that slow turbo spool and often get mistaken for turbo trouble. Check the manifolds, up-pipe and gaskets for leaks and soot tracks first.

Which gaskets do I need for an up-pipe job?

Plan on every joint the pipe touches: manifold to up-pipe, up-pipe to turbo and, on the LMM, up-pipe to EGR cooler. Dead gaskets cause the same leaks as a cracked pipe, so reusing old ones risks doing the job twice.
