The 6.7L Cummins in this generation runs a Bosch common rail at up to 29,000 psi. On 2019-2020 trucks the high-pressure pump is a CP4.2, an aluminum-case pump with two plungers riding on roller followers. For 2021-2024 Ram went back to the CP3, a steel-case pump with three plungers and bucket followers. The engine is approved for ultra-low-sulfur diesel and biodiesel blends up to B20, and running more biodiesel than that risks corrosion in the fuel system. Diesel Hub names ULSD lubricity as the leading theory behind failures of roller-follower pumps like the CP4, and that is why additives get so much attention on these trucks.
What goes wrong without protection
When a CP4.2 fails it sheds metal into the rail, injectors, lines and tank. Symptoms include ticking, loss of power, stalling, a no-start, and metal in the fuel filter, and failures can come at any mileage, with many near 100,000 miles. FCA recalled the 2019-2020 trucks under Y78 (21V-880) to replace the CP4 with a CP3, so the recall, not a bottle, is the fix for a truck that still has the original pump. An additive is a preventive step. Cold is the other condition to plan for: Diesel Hub recommends adding an anti-gel treatment in extreme cold on top of the everyday lubricity additive.
Everyday treatment vs. winter treatment
Think of additives in two groups. The everyday group is the lubricity treatment that goes in at every fill; for this truck it must be compatible with the DPF and SCR aftertreatment. The seasonal group is anti-gel and winter blends for hard cold, plus emergency winter rescue treatments. Cetane boosters and cleaners are a third, optional category. Choose the everyday product first, keep a winter product on hand if you travel or tow through cold country, and read every label for DPF and SCR compatibility before you pour.

Fitment notes
Additives are not year-specific the way pumps and filters are, but this truck has rules. Use products labeled safe for the DPF and SCR system, since every 2019-2024 6.7L Cummins pickup carries both. Keep the fuel and DEF fills straight: a dealer diagnosed DEF contamination from diesel fuel on a 2020 3500, so additives and diesel go in the fuel tank only. Biodiesel above B20 is outside the approved range. An additive does not replace filter changes; both fuel filters still get changed every 15,000 miles or 12 months.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2021-2024 Ram with the CP3 need a fuel additive?
The lubricity-additive-at-every-fill advice is aimed at CP4-equipped trucks, and the same additive is harmless on a CP3. On a 2021-2024 truck it is a choice rather than a must. On a 2019-2020 truck that still has the CP4.2, it is the standard recommendation, and it should be DPF- and SCR-compatible either way.
When should I add an anti-gel?
Diesel Hub recommends anti-gel in extreme cold, on top of the everyday lubricity additive. Hot Shot's Secret, Lucas Oil, Alliant Power and Exergy all have winter products in this collection. If your truck lives where it stays warm, as ours do in Wildwood, FL, keep a bottle aboard for trips north.
Can I run biodiesel in my 6.7L Cummins?
Yes, up to B20. The 2019-2024 6.7L Cummins is approved for ULSD and biodiesel blends up to B20, and going past that limit risks fuel-system corrosion. An additive does not change that limit.
Will an additive fix a CP4 that is already failing?
No. Additives are preventive. Ticking, power loss, stalling, a no-start or metal in the fuel filter on a 2019-2020 truck point to the pump, and the OEM remedy is the Y78 recall, which replaces the CP4 with a CP3 at no charge at the dealer.
