Call or Text (352) 722-5295Tools for the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins
The 6.7L Cummins in the fourth-gen Ram HD is a 24-valve engine with a Bosch CP3 injection pump and a Holset variable-geometry turbo: the HE351VE on 2010-2012 trucks and the HE300VG on 2013-2018. Most routine service is ordinary wrench work, but a handful of jobs go better with the right tool. Valve lash is due at 150,000 miles. Head studs are torqued in steps to 150 ft-lb and re-torqued hot. This collection gathers tools for those jobs, plus the general shop gear that makes any diesel job easier.
Where the right tool matters
Tools do not fail in a pattern on this truck, but some jobs punish the wrong one:
- Engine fuel filter cap: it is plastic and commonly breaks from failed removal attempts. Access gets tighter with an aftermarket intake horn in the way. Take your time and use a tool that fits the cap.
- Valve lash: serviced at 150,000 miles, with settings of 0.010 and 0.026 in.
- Head studs: torqued 50, 100, then 150 ft-lb with ARP Ultra-Torque, then re-torqued hot. Chasing threads first is good practice before any torque-critical job.
- Turbo actuator diagnosis: codes P00AF and P003A point to the actuator, while P226B and P226C point to stuck vanes. An OBD-II monitor or datalogger can read them, so diagnose before you buy parts. An OEM Holset actuator also needs dealer-level scan-tool calibration after install, so budget for that or choose a self-calibrating unit.
Job-specific tools vs. shop gear
For a one-time job, the specific tool is the whole decision: a 24-valve spring compressor for spring work on the head, a gear puller for the injection pump, a socket made for the transmission filter. For a truck you work on every season, shop gear pays off over time: a modular steel work bench, a flexible silicone tool tray, a quick disconnect tool kit, a right-angle grease gun adapter for fittings you cannot reach straight on, and a cutter for air line hose. The boost tester sits in between. With the right inlet adapter it seals the turbo's compressor inlet so you can pressurize the intake side and hunt down boost leaks before you blame the turbo.
What we carry
- Engine-specific tools: the XDP XD311 and Hamilton Cams 24-valve spring compressors, the XDP XD134 injection pump gear puller listed for 1989-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins, and the PPE billet aluminum transmission fluid filter socket (68 mm, 14-flute) listed for 2007.5-2024 6.7L Cummins.
- Thread chasers: XDP thread cleaning chasers in M8x1.25, M12x1.5, M12x1.75 and M16x2.0.
- Boost testing: the Calibrated Power Solutions Stealth Boost Tester HD regulator, a Holset compressor inlet adapter listed for 1998-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins, and an inlet adapter for S300, S400, S400R and S500 turbos.
- Shop gear: Wehrli Custom Fabrication modular steel work benches in 32 x 48, 32 x 72 and 32 x 90 inch sizes, the S&B flexible silicone tool tray, the Merchant Automotive right-angle grease gun adapter and quick disconnect tool kit, and the Air Lift air line hose cutter.
Fitment notes
Much of this page works on any truck in the shop: the benches, tool tray, thread chasers, grease gun adapter, disconnect kit and hose cutter are not tied to one engine. The engine-specific tools list their own ranges, so read each title. The spring compressors are for 24-valve Cummins engines. The S300-S500 inlet adapter is for those turbo frames; a stock 2010-2018 6.7L runs a Holset, so use the Holset adapter on a factory turbo. For the PPE filter socket, confirm your transmission, since these trucks came with the 68RFE or Aisin AS69RC automatic or the G56 manual. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What is the valve lash spec on a 2010-2018 6.7L Cummins?
Valve lash is serviced at 150,000 miles, with settings of 0.010 and 0.026 in. Check the service manual for which valve gets which setting and for the adjustment sequence. If the job turns into spring work on the head, the XDP and Hamilton Cams 24-valve spring compressors handle it.
How are head studs torqued on the 6.7L Cummins?
In three steps, 50, 100 and 150 ft-lb, using ARP Ultra-Torque, then re-torqued hot. Clean threads help the torque wrench do its job, and the XDP thread chasers clean threads without cutting new ones. Call us if you want help picking the right chaser size.
How do I tell a bad turbo actuator from stuck vanes?
Read the codes first. P00AF and P003A point to the actuator, while P226B and P226C point to stuck vanes. The boost tester on this page helps rule out intake leaks while you are at it. If the actuator is the problem, an OEM Holset unit needs dealer-level scan-tool calibration after install.
Why do engine fuel filter caps break on these trucks?
The engine-mounted fuel filter cap is plastic, and it commonly breaks during failed removal attempts. An aftermarket intake horn can make access even tighter. Take your time and use a tool that fits the cap properly.
