The MAHLE 224-3732WR Piston With Rings (Standard) is an OEM replacement piston for rebuilding the 6.7L Cummins in 2007.5-2018 Dodge Ram and Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. It is crafted to factory specifications with a lightweight, expansion-controlled design, so a stock-spec rebuild gets OE performance from the bottom end.
Fitment
MAHLE lists the 224-3732WR for the 6.7L Cummins:
- 2007.5-2012 6.7L Cummins
- 2013-2018 6.7L Cummins
Those engines went in Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups through 2009 and Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups from 2010. Engine ratings and some hard parts differ between pickups and 3500 chassis cabs, so chassis-cab owners should verify fitment separately.
This is a Compression Standard, Size Standard piston. On 2013-2018 trucks, High Output engines behind the Aisin automatic run 16.2:1 pistons, versus 17.2:1 on 68RFE and G56 engines, and the piston part numbers differ. Match by transmission and HO status, not just the year. Verify fitment by VIN or call us before you order.
Why this part
A piston job means the engine is coming apart, and the 6.7L has two well-known ways to get there. The first is the grid heater fastener. The stud and nut on the factory grid heater can come loose and fall into the intake manifold, and because the engine sits at a 5-degree rake, the hardware rolls back into cylinder #6. Banks documents it on 2007.5-2012 trucks, where it can cause catastrophic failure that needs a complete engine rebuild, and all 2007.5-2024 trucks are exposed. There is often no warning before the fastener drops.
The second is the head gasket. Head gasket failures happen at a higher rate on the 6.7L than on the 5.9L, and the risk rises sharply with added boost and tuning. Not every head gasket job needs pistons, but when the bottom end needs them and the build stays stock, a standard-size, standard-compression MAHLE piston puts it back to factory spec.
While it is apart, plan the rest of the job. Any head job on a 6.7L should include new injector O-rings and combustion seals, with valve lash set before and again after the hot re-torque. If the truck tows heavy or carries a tune, head studs are the standard insurance.
After the rebuild, watch the oil. On DPF-era trucks the regeneration strategy post-injects fuel, and some washes past the rings into the crankcase. Ram treats up to 5% fuel in oil as acceptable, and the oil level can rise above full. Use only low-ash CJ-4 or CK-4 oil in any DPF-equipped 6.7L.

About MAHLE
MAHLE started in 1920 as a small engine shop in Stuttgart, Germany, and pistons are what it built its name on. The line now runs from pistons and piston-with-rings assemblies in standard and oversize bores to rings, liners, bearings and complete gasket sets. Shop the MAHLE parts we carry for Cummins, Duramax and Power Stroke engines.
Frequently asked questions
Does this piston fit a 2013-2018 High Output 6.7L?
Check before you order. High Output engines behind the Aisin automatic run 16.2:1 pistons versus 17.2:1 on 68RFE and G56 engines, and the piston part numbers differ. This piston is listed as Compression Standard. Send us your VIN and we will match it.
How many do I need?
The 6.7L is an inline six, so a full engine takes six pistons. MAHLE's note reads Sold as a set, priced per piece, so confirm the quantity with us when you order.
Is this an oversize piston?
No. It is Size Standard with a non-coated skirt. MAHLE pistons also come in oversize bores, so call us if your machinist has measured your block oversize.
