2007.5-2009 Dodge 6.7L Cummins Tools

This is the tool shelf for the 2007.5-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins: thread chasers, valve spring compressors, a pump gear puller, boost-leak test gear and shop benches. The one tool every owner of this generation should have is not a wrench, though. It is a scan tool or monitor that reads DPF soot load and regen status.

Tools for the 2007.5-2009 RAM 6.7L Cummins

The 6.7L Cummins that landed in mid-2007 is a cast-iron inline six with a cam-in-block, 24 valves and a gear-driven Bosch CP3 feeding the common rail. It shares plenty of service tooling with the 5.9L 24-valve before it, which is why several tools here are listed for both engines. What is new on these trucks is the Holset HE351VE variable-geometry turbo and the DPF-era exhaust, and both change what you test and how you read the truck. The tools below cover the jobs owners actually do at home or in a small shop: oil and transmission service, thread repair, valve spring work, pump gear removal and boost-leak testing.

What the service work calls for

Tools do not fail the way parts do, so this section is about the jobs. The 6.7L oil change is the one most owners start with. The service procedure calls for a cap/plug tool on the filter (the Lisle 57180 is the one usually named), a filter pre-filled about three-quarters, and the drain plug torqued to 35 lb-ft. Valve lash checks mean turning the engine over by hand, which is the job of a crankshaft barring tool. Keep both of those on your list when you plan the work. Pickups with the automatic run the 68RFE six-speed, and the PPE billet socket, a 68mm 14-flute cap socket, is listed for transmission fluid filter service on 6.7L trucks. The boost tester and its adapters pressurize the intake side so you can hunt down a leak with the engine off instead of guessing.

Shop-grade tools vs. one-job tools

Think about how often you will use it. A thread chaser or a grease gun adapter earns its spot in any box. A pump gear puller or a valve spring compressor might come out once in the life of the truck, but when you need it, nothing else does the job cleanly. Chasers clean threads that are already cut; they are not taps, so they restore a bolt hole without cutting away metal. For boost testing, a dedicated regulator lets you set and hold a test pressure instead of guessing with shop air. If you are building a garage around the truck, the WCFab steel benches give you a flat, heavy work surface for heads, turbos and transmission parts.

What we carry

XDP thread cleaning chasers in M8x1.25, M12x1.5, M12x1.75 and M16x2.0, plus the XDP XD311 valve spring compressor for 24-valve engines and the XD134 injection pump gear puller. Hamilton Cams makes a 24-valve spring compressor listed for 1998.5-2018 5.9L and 6.7L trucks. Calibrated Power supplies the Stealth Boost Tester HD regulator, a Holset compressor inlet adapter for 1998-2018 Cummins, and an inlet adapter for S300, S400, S400R and S500 compressors. PPE has the billet aluminum transmission filter socket. BD Diesel offers a high-idle kit listed for 2007.5-2024 Ram. Merchant Automotive covers a right-angle grease gun adapter and a quick disconnect tool kit, S&B makes a flexible silicone tool tray, and WCFab builds modular steel work benches in 32 x 48, 32 x 72 and 32 x 90-inch sizes.

Fitment notes

These trucks were sold as the Dodge Ram; most vendors list them simply as Ram. Most tools here are not year-locked, but the engine-specific ones are, so check the range in each title. The pump gear puller is listed for 1989-2018 Cummins, the XDP spring compressor for 1998.5-2024, the Hamilton Cams compressor for 1998.5-2018, and the Holset inlet adapter for 1998-2018. A 2007.5-2009 truck sits inside all of those ranges. The factory turbo is a Holset HE351VE; if yours has been changed, match the boost tester adapter to the compressor inlet you actually have. When in doubt, verify by VIN or call the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most useful tool for a 2007.5-2009 6.7L Cummins owner?

A scan tool or monitor that reads DPF soot load and regen status. The 2007.5-2012 pickups are the no-DEF DPF generation, relying on cooled EGR and a NOx adsorber catalyst, so knowing where the filter stands helps you plan drives and service. It is a different kind of tool from the hand tools on this page and worth owning alongside them.

Do I need a special tool to change the 6.7L oil filter?

The service procedure calls out a cap/plug tool, the Lisle 57180, for the 6.7L filter. Pre-fill the new filter about three-quarters and torque the drain plug to 35 lb-ft. The engine takes 12 quarts with the filter, and it needs low-ash CJ-4 oil because of the DPF.

What is the injection pump gear puller for?

The Bosch CP3 on this engine is gear-driven, and pulling the pump means separating it from its drive gear. The XDP XD134 puller is made for that job and is listed for 1989-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins, which covers your truck. A puller made for the gear protects it and the pump shaft from pry-bar damage.

Will the Stealth Boost Tester fit my stock turbo?

Yes, with the right adapter. The Calibrated Power Holset compressor inlet adapter is listed for 1998-2018 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins, and the factory turbo on your truck is a Holset HE351VE. The HD regulator sets the test pressure. If the truck runs an S300, S400, S400R or S500 compressor, use the separate adapter for those.
