2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Suspension Components

This page holds the individual suspension parts for the 2004.5-2007 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins: shocks, air helper springs and compressors, traction bars, sway bar links and bushings. Know this before you start: on a front end that wanders or wobbles, find the loose joint first, then buy the part.

Suspension components on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The third-generation Dodge Ram HD puts a link-coil solid axle under the front of the 5.9L Cummins, located by upper and lower trailing arms and a two-eye track bar, with leaf springs out back. Components are the parts you change one at a time: a worn bushing, a tired shock, or an add-on like air helper springs or traction bars that bolts on without changing ride height.

What wears out

Most of the wear on this front end happens at the joints. Track bar bushings and the frame-end joint let the axle shift side to side, which shows up as wander, clunk and death wobble. Ball joints and hub bearings are the known weak links of the 2003-2009 front end. Upper and lower control-arm bushings wear at high mileage and let the axle move fore and aft, felt as a clunk on braking or acceleration. Out back, the leaf springs sag under fifth-wheel and gooseneck loads. When you chase a wobble, the steering damper (52122370AB) and track bar often get replaced together, but do the on-the-ground test first: have a helper saw the wheel while you watch each joint for movement.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A track bar with worn bushings but a tight frame-end joint can go back in service with a bushing kit. Once the frame-end joint is worn, replace the bar. For towing, air helper springs with an onboard compressor are the upgrade that controls rear sag, and Bilstein shocks are the usual partner.

Fitment notes

Check drivetrain first. Most of the Bilstein shocks and all of the BDS parts here are listed for 4WD, and Bilstein lists a separate rear shock for 2WD. The BD Diesel traction bar kit is listed for trucks without air suspension, and the BDS fixed traction bars are listed for 2500 trucks with a 3.5-inch axle. Front-end parts for 2003 and later do not cross to the 1994-2002 trucks, though some shocks are listed for both. On a 2007, confirm the truck has the 5.9L and not the 6.7L, which arrived in trucks built after January 1, 2007. Verify by VIN when unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace the track bar or just the bushings?

If the bushings are worn but the frame-end joint is tight, a bushing kit can put the bar back in service. If the frame-end joint has play, the bar needs replacing. Check it with the truck on the ground while a helper saws the steering wheel back and forth.

How do I pick the right Bilstein shock?

Bilstein uses separate part numbers by position and drivetrain, and each title here spells out front or rear, 2WD or 4WD, and the years. Match all three. If the truck is leveled or lifted, call us before you order so the shock suits the new ride height.

Do air helper springs raise my towing capacity?

No. They level the truck and control rear sag under fifth-wheel and gooseneck loads, which is the common hauling complaint on this generation. They do not change the truck's ratings, so stay within the numbers on your door sticker.
