2003-2004 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Transmissions & Parts

This collection covers the transmission on the 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins: built 48RE automatics, converters, valve-body parts, billet shafts, coolers, pans, filters, flex plates and fluid. The one thing to know is that the factory 48RE is rated for 560-570 lb-ft of input torque, and the engine was detuned to stay inside it. Heat and added power are what wear it out.

The transmission on the 2003-2004 Ram 2500/3500 5.9L Cummins

Your truck left the factory with an automatic or a six-speed manual. Most automatics are the 48RE, a four-speed lock-up unit from the Chrysler 727 family that runs on ATF+4. Early 2003 standard-output trucks could have the lighter 47RE, which shares the same 2.45/1.45/1.00/0.69 gear ratios. High Output trucks could also be ordered with the NV5600 six-speed manual, a cast-iron box rated for 550 lb-ft that weighs about 360 lb. The Cummins was detuned when it was paired with the automatic, which tells you how close to its limit the 48RE runs even in stock form. On 4x4 trucks, the transmission feeds an NV271 manual-shift or NV273 electric-shift transfer case.

What fails and why

The 48RE has a handful of known weak spots, and most of them show up under towing or added power.

  • Torque converter. Limited clutch area and a cast apply piston that deflects during lockup. Watch for slipping lockup, shudder and high transmission temperatures while towing.
  • Intermediate band. Soft metal with a thin friction lining that stretches and loses material by 120,000-150,000 miles. You will feel a flare on the 1-2 or 2-3 shift and delayed engagement, and the fluid will smell burnt.
  • Governor pressure transducer and solenoid. A wear item at any mileage. Symptoms are erratic or harsh shifts, limp mode and governor-pressure codes. The 48RE also sets codes if line pressure is raised above about 170 psi.
  • Heat. Towing in overdrive with fluid over 260F triggers protective downshifts, so the truck hunts gears on grades and the fluid turns dark.
  • Direct clutch drum. The cast-aluminum piston can crack, mostly on modified trucks, causing loss of third or reverse and slipping under power.

The NV5600 in these trucks is the 2001-and-later version with the 1-3/8 in input shaft and redesigned synchros, a clear improvement over the 1999-2000 boxes.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

On a stock truck that works light, staying on top of ATF+4, the filter and band adjustments goes a long way. Once you tow heavy or add power, builders follow a familiar order. First comes a lower-stall billet triple-disc converter with an upgraded stator and apply piston, along with a deep finned pan and an auxiliary cooler to control temperature. Next is a rigid 727-style intermediate band, billet servos and accumulators, and a valve body with an upgraded governor pressure system. Plan on a billet input shaft for anything past about 500 hp with lockup; stock shafts have snapped with as little as 500 rwhp. If you want it done in one step, complete built 48RE packages are sold by horsepower stage. On the NV5600, the usual add-on for a tuned truck is a clutch sized to the engine's torque.

What we carry

BD Diesel covers the most ground: built 48RE transmission and converter packages, Build-It kits, billet input, intermediate and output shafts, valve bodies, pressure transducer upgrades, lock-up controllers, short shift kits and Xtruded auxiliary coolers. ATS Diesel Performance adds a complete 48RE package, an NV5600 performance manual transmission and governor pressure transducers. For cooling you will find Mishimoto replacement and universal coolers and radiator bundles, a Fleece Performance Engineering cooler and line kit, and a CSF OEM-style replacement cooler. Deep pans come from XDP, PPE and Mag-Hytec, with a Mahle pan gasket. Flex plates come from XDP and BD, with hardware from DNR Customs. Fluid is from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil.

Fitment notes

Read your VIN before you order. The 8th digit marks the engine: '6' is the standard output, which may have the 47RE in early 2003, and 'C' is the High Output, paired with the 48RE or the NV5600. The 47RE uses a 3-prong neutral safety switch and the 48RE a 5-prong, and a 48RE converter fits a 47RE but not the other way around. 2003 and early 2004 trucks use a mechanical throttle-valve cable; the electronic TTVA came with the 2004.5 trucks. Billet output shafts are sold 2WD or 4WD specific and in 23- or 29-spline. G56 parts do not fit, since that gearbox arrived during 2005. Many parts here are listed for wider spans like 1994-2007, so check the years in each title.

Frequently asked questions

Does my 2003-2004 Ram have a 47RE or a 48RE?

Check the 8th digit of the VIN. A '6' marks the standard-output engine, and an early 2003 truck with that engine may have the 47RE. A 'C' marks the High Output engine, which got the 48RE when it had an automatic. The neutral safety switch is a second check: three prongs on the 47RE, five on the 48RE.

Why does my 48RE downshift out of overdrive when I tow up a grade?

Heat is a common cause. When fluid passes 260F in overdrive under load, the transmission forces a downshift to protect itself, and dark fluid means it has been running hot. A deep finned pan and an auxiliary cooler are the standard fixes, and a lower-stall converter is the other half of that first upgrade.

What causes harsh shifts and limp mode on this transmission?

The governor pressure transducer and solenoid are the first place to look. Both are known for short service life, and failures bring erratic or harsh shifts, limp mode and governor-pressure trouble codes. Replacement transducers from ATS and upgrade kits from BD are in this collection.

How much power can a stock 48RE handle?

It is rated for 560-570 lb-ft of input torque, and the engine was detuned from the factory to stay under that. Stock input shafts have snapped with as little as 500 rwhp, so a billet input shaft is the move for anything past about 500 hp with lockup. Built 48RE packages from BD and ATS are rated by horsepower stage.

How often should the 48RE be serviced?

Published intervals differ. One 48RE schedule calls for fluid, filter and a band adjustment every 30,000 miles, while a longer maintenance schedule lists 100,000 miles for the ATF+4 alone. A pan drain takes about 4 quarts. If you tow, the shorter interval is the safer one to follow.
