The 47RE is a TorqueFlite at heart: a 727 with an overdrive added, steel planetary carriers and more clutch plates. That is why pans, filters and gaskets here often list 727 alongside 47RE. Unlike the 47RH, which used hydraulic governor pressure, the 47RE controls governor pressure electronically through a solenoid and transducer, while the valve body stays hydraulic. It holds 14.5-16.5 quarts dry and about 4 quarts at a pan service, runs ATF+4, and takes the MOPAR 52118789 or WIX 58613 filter on 1998-2003 trucks. Manual trucks run the NV4500 five-speed or the NV5600 six-speed, and those two do not share a fluid spec.
What wears out
Governor pressure solenoid, governor pressure transducer and output-shaft speed sensor failures cause the classic 47RE shift faults: no 1-2 upshift, stuck in first, or limp mode. The speed sensor lives outside the case behind the pan and should read 600-1,200 ohms. Converter lock/unlock in third and overdrive usually traces to APPS signal noise from the alternator wire sharing its loom. Bands stretch over time, and a loose band means harsh, slipping or late shifts; on 1997-2002 trucks both bands are set at 72 in-lb, then the front is backed off 1-7/8 turns and the rear 3 turns. Add power or heavy towing and slipping, delayed shifts and converter failure arrive well before the 100,000-150,000 miles a stock, lightly loaded 47RE can see.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Diagnose first. Load-test both batteries, clean every ground including under the dash, then check the brake switch, APPS, governor pressure sensor and solenoid and stored codes before swapping parts. On a stock truck, a replacement transducer or valve body plus fresh fluid and a filter is the straightforward repair. For towing or added power, step up: an aftermarket valve body, a stronger converter, billet input, intermediate and output shafts, or a staged Build-It kit, backed by a deep pan and an auxiliary cooler.
What we carry
From BD Diesel: valve bodies (including a full manual valve body and one with a governor pressure solenoid), Stage 1 through Stage 4 Build-It kits, billet input, intermediate and output shafts, a pressure transducer upgrade kit and valve body electronics kit, Proforce and Triple Torqueforce converters, short shift kits, the 2LOW Unloc, the Autoloc and Torqloc converter lock-up controls, an in-line filter kit and an auxiliary cooler. From ATS Diesel Performance: governor pressure and line pressure transducers, a GM solenoid block conversion kit and billet shafts. Coolers come from Mishimoto, Fleece Performance Engineering and CSF; pans from XDP, Mag-Hytec and PPE, with a Mahle pan gasket; flex plates from XDP and BD with a DNR Customs install kit; fluid from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil.
Fitment notes
Many 47RE internals and electronics here are listed for 1994-2007 or 1998.5-2002 Cummins trucks, but check the year range on each one. The ATS 47RE governor pressure switch, for example, comes in a 1996-1999 version and a 1999-2007 version, and BD's transducer upgrade kit is listed for 2000-2007, which leaves out 1998.5-1999 trucks. Universal coolers need you to plan mounting and line routing; the Ram-specific Mishimoto and Fleece kits are listed for 1994-2002. Manual-transmission owners: the NV4500 needs GL-4 and the NV5600 takes MOPAR 4874464. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Which transmission filter does a 1998.5-2002 47RE use?
The factory-style pan filter is MOPAR 52118789 or WIX 58613 for 1998-2003. A pan service takes about 4 quarts of ATF+4. If you add a deep pan or an in-line filter, check the product page for the filter and spacer it calls for.
My truck will not shift out of first. Where do I start?
Check the governor pressure transducer, governor pressure solenoid and output-shaft speed sensor. The speed sensor sits outside the case behind the pan and should read 600-1,200 ohms. Pull stored codes and confirm the batteries and grounds are healthy before you replace the valve body.
Do I need billet shafts?
On a stock truck that tows light, no. Billet input, intermediate and output shafts belong in a 47RE being built for more power or heavy towing, usually alongside an upgraded converter and valve body. The stock 47RE is rated for only about 450 lb-ft of input, and failures come much sooner once power goes up.
