1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Transmission Pans

Transmission pans and pan parts for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins and the 47RE automatic. A deeper pan adds fluid capacity and heat rejection for towing, which matters on a transmission rated around 450 lb-ft of input torque. Every pan drop is also the time to change the filter and adjust the bands.

Transmission pans on the 1998.5-2002 Ram 5.9L Cummins

The 47RE is essentially a 727 with an overdrive and stronger internals, including steel planetary carriers and more clutch plates than the 46RE. That family tree is why the pans and gaskets here list 727, 47RH, 47RE and 48RE together. The factory fluid is ATF+4, with 14.5-16.5 quarts dry, but a routine pan-drop service only exchanges about 4 quarts.

Why owners go deeper

Load shortens a 47RE's life. Diesel Power Products puts a stock unit at 100,000-150,000 miles with a stock engine and light loads, with failures coming much sooner once power or towing is added. Deeper pans and auxiliary coolers add fluid capacity and heat rejection for towing, and synthetic fluid helps too. A deep pan is also a standard piece of the 47RE upgrade path, along with converters and valve bodies.

Service while the pan is off

Change the filter while you're in there: MOPAR 52118789 or WIX 58613 fits 1998-2003. Refill with ATF+4. Bands stretch and loosen with use, and bad adjustment shows up as harsh shifts, slipping or delayed shifts. The 1997-2002 spec is front band tightened to 72 in-lb and backed off 1-7/8 turns, rear band tightened to 72 in-lb and backed off 3 turns. Earlier 47RE years use a different front-band back-off, so use the 1997-2002 number on these trucks.

What we carry

Mag-Hytec 727-D deep and 727-DD extra-deep pans, the Pacific Performance Engineering deep pan, the XDP XD450 Xtra Deep aluminum pan for the 47RE and 48RE, and the BD Diesel 1061501 deep sump pan. For the service itself there's the MAHLE W39003TC pan gasket for 727, 518, 47RH, 47RE and 48RE transmissions, and the ATS Diesel Performance 402-009-1000 drain plug, which fits ATS pans and differential covers. More drivetrain parts are on the Cummins hub.

Fitment notes

These pans fit the 47RE automatic only. NV4500 and NV5600 manual trucks don't use them, and every 2001-2002 High Output truck is a manual. Most pans here list 1989-2007 5.9L Cummins fitment, and the PPE pan lists 1989-2009. A deeper pan holds more fluid than stock, so fill to the pan maker's instructions rather than the old service number, and check whether your pan ships with a gasket. Verify by VIN, or call and we'll confirm.

Frequently asked questions

How much fluid does the 47RE hold?

Dry fill is 14.5-16.5 quarts of ATF+4, and a pan-drop service exchanges about 4 quarts. A deep pan raises that total, so follow the fill guidance that comes with the pan and confirm the level on the dipstick.

Does a deep pan replace a transmission cooler?

No, they work together. Deeper pans and auxiliary coolers are both towing upgrades that add fluid capacity and heat rejection. If you tow heavy with a 47RE, a deep pan is a good first step, and the filter and band service should come with it.

Should I adjust the bands when I drop the pan?

Yes, bands are a service item at fluid changes because they stretch and loosen with use. On a 1998.5-2002 truck, torque the front band to 72 in-lb and back off 1-7/8 turns, and the rear to 72 in-lb and back off 3 turns. Harsh, slipping or delayed shifts are the signs they were overdue.
