Mufflers on the 1989-1993 RAM 5.9L Cummins

On the first-gen 5.9L Cummins, exhaust leaves the Holset H1C turbo through a downpipe and runs as a single system under the cab to the muffler. Aftermarket 4 in downpipe-back kits replace the factory pipe and muffler, and they typically ship with a street-profile sound muffler and a rolled tip. A standalone muffler makes sense when you're keeping the pipe you have, building a custom system, or simply want a different sound than the one your kit came with.

How to choose

Start with size. The universal Quiet Tone muffler comes in a 4 in version that lines up with the 4 in systems sold for these trucks, and the 5 in mufflers are meant for 5 in pipe. Next, pick the sound. The Quiet Tone line is the place to look if a calmer cab on long highway runs matters to you. The Armor Plus GP290022 is a high-flow muffler, and the Armor Lite M20681 is a resonator-style muffler. Resonators add another layer of sound control to a system you already like. Last, pick the material. MBRP offers aluminized and stainless steel construction, including a 409 stainless universal muffler, so you can match the rest of your system.

What we carry

Everything here comes from MBRP: diesel resonators in aluminized and stainless steel, the M20681 Armor Lite resonator muffler, the Armor Lite 5 in Quiet Tone muffler, the universal 4 in Quiet Tone muffler, the universal 5 in 409 stainless muffler and the GP290022 Armor Plus 5 in high-flow muffler. For tips, pipe and manifold parts, see our full exhaust section.

Fitment notes

These are universal mufflers, so fitment comes down to inlet and outlet diameter, overall length and where your hangers sit. Measure the pipe on your truck before ordering, especially on an older truck where a previous owner may have changed the exhaust. If you're replacing the whole system instead, remember that kits for these years come in separate 2x4 and 4x4 versions, and the transfer case can be a tight spot on W250 and W350 trucks. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

What size muffler fits a 1989-1993 Ram Cummins?

Match it to your pipe. Aftermarket systems for first-gens are 4 in, and the universal 4 in Quiet Tone lines up with that. The 5 in mufflers here are for trucks running 5 in pipe.

Does a downpipe-back kit come with a muffler?

Yes. Aftermarket 4 in systems for these trucks typically ship with a street-profile sound muffler and a rolled tip, and they replace the factory pipe and muffler. Buy a separate muffler when you're keeping your current pipe or building a custom setup.

Should I pick a muffler or a resonator?

A muffler is the main sound control in the system, and a resonator is added alongside it to fine-tune the sound. If you like your system but want it a little calmer, start with a resonator or one of the Quiet Tone mufflers.
