1989-1993 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Monitor Accessories

Monitor accessories for the 1989-1993 Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins: add-on sensors that give a digital monitor something to display. A first-gen has no ECM and no diagnostic port, so every reading on a monitor screen starts with a sensor you install. Start with EGT.

Monitor accessories for the 1989-1993 RAM 5.9L Cummins

On a newer truck, a monitor pulls its data from the engine computer. The first-gen Cummins never had one: its Bosch VE44 pump is fully mechanical, and the pre-1996 chassis has no diagnostic port. That makes the accessory the whole system. A built D350 with an Edge CTS2 shows the approach, since that monitor works only because boost, EGT, fuel pressure and temperature sensors were added to the truck.

The Edge sensors here

Edge Products makes the sensors in this collection as part of its EAS line. The 98620 EAS EGT Kit is sold as a Daily Driver/Tow Kit and reads exhaust gas temperature. The 98607 EAS Pressure Sensor reads 0-100 psi and gives your monitor a pressure channel, such as boost or fuel pressure. Each needs an Edge monitor to display its reading. The monitor is sold separately, so confirm the pairing with us by phone if you're not sure.

Getting the readings right

Put the EGT probe ahead of the turbo, in the exhaust manifold or the up-pipe. Post-turbo readings always run lower, which hides the number you care about. The guideline is to stay under 1,250°F and avoid long stretches at 1,200-1,250°F. For a pressure reading, decide what you want to watch before you install, since one sensor reads one source.

Mounting and fitment notes

Owners who prefer standalone gauges can mount them in A-pillar or dash pods made for the 1989-1993 cab; those pods are not part of this collection. With a monitor, plan where the screen will sit before you run wires. Before you route any intake-side line, check whether your truck has the air-to-air intercooler that arrived in mid-1991, since intake plumbing differs between intercooled and non-intercooled trucks and the model year alone won't tell you. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Do these Edge sensors work without an Edge monitor?

No. EAS sensors feed an Edge monitor and have no display of their own. If you'd rather run standalone gauges, those use their own senders and can mount in a pod made for the first-gen cab.

Which reading should I add first on a first-gen?

EGT. The factory cluster has no EGT or boost reading, and EGT is the number with a hard ceiling: under 1,250°F, with no long stretches above 1,200°F. The Edge 98620 kit covers it.

Why does my post-turbo EGT reading look low?

Because the probe is in the wrong spot. Readings taken after the turbo are always lower than at the manifold or up-pipe. Move the probe ahead of the turbo if you want a number you can hold to the 1,250°F guideline.
