Keep expectations in the right place and additives are useful. Owners run them for injector lubricity and with regen behavior in mind, and on an engine that feeds six-hole Bosch injectors at 26,000 psi through a single frame-mounted filter, lubricity is not a trivial concern. What a bottle cannot do is undo hardware. It will not clear a diesel particulate filter that is already loaded, it will not bleed air out of a cracked filter housing, and it will not restore an injector that has drifted out of spec. GM approved fuel blends up to B5 biodiesel for the LMM.
Reading the shelf
The products here fall into clear groups. Everyday treatments meant for regular dosing: Hot Shot's Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment, Alliant Power ULTRAGUARD, Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment, Merchant Automotive's diesel fuel additive, XDP Diesel Power Plus and Exergy Performance's 4 and 16 ounce bottles. Concentrated cleaners for occasional use: Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Extreme and Lucas Oil Diesel Deep Clean. Lubricity products: Alliant Power LUBRIGUARD and Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme. Cold-weather protection: Alliant Power WINTERGUARD, Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Winter Anti-Gel and EDT + Winter Defense, Lucas Oil Anti-Gel Cold Weather Diesel Treatment, Exergy's winter blend, and a Winter Rescue bottle intended for fuel that has already gelled. Lucas Oil Cetane Power Booster is the cetane option. Case packs are available on several lines, which is how fleets and shops usually buy them.
Where additives fit in the maintenance order
On an LMM, chemistry comes after the basics. The fuel filter goes in on the manufacturer's schedule, and the filter-head seals and hand primer get inspected, because that housing is where air enters the supply and starves the CP3. If a Sierra is idling rough, hazing on start-up, losing economy or cranking hard when cold - the pattern high-mileage trucks show, with no published mileage threshold - the answer is a balance-rate reading at idle, roughly -4 to +4 mm3, followed by a return-flow test, with only the proven-bad injectors replaced. Run an additive as routine upkeep, not as a substitute for that sequence.
What we carry
Everyday and concentrated treatments from Hot Shot's Secret, the GUARD-series treatments from Alliant Power, treatments, deep clean and a cetane booster from Lucas Oil, 4 and 16 ounce bottles and winter blend from Exergy Performance, Diesel Power Plus from XDP, and a diesel fuel additive from Merchant Automotive. Filters, pumps and the rest of the fuel system live on the other Duramax pages for this truck, and fuel additives for every platform we support are grouped in one place.
Fitment notes
Nothing on this page is cut for a specific cab or trim, so Work Truck, SLE and SLT Sierras all use the same bottles. Dose by tank, though: a standard box carries 26 gallons and an 8-foot box carries 34, and the label ratio assumes you know which one you are filling. Stay inside the B5 biodiesel blend GM approved, and follow the label on cold-weather products rather than guessing.
Frequently asked questions
How much additive does a Sierra HD tank take?
Work from the label ratio and your tank size. These trucks hold 26 gallons with the standard box and 34 gallons with the long box, so the same bottle treats a different number of fills depending on the truck. Overdosing is not a shortcut to a better result.
Is there an additive that will clean up a loaded particulate filter?
No. Owners do use additives partly with regen behavior in mind, but a filter that is already loaded is a diagnostic and repair job, not something a bottle resolves. If the truck is regenerating far more often than it used to, bring it in and have the engine and exhaust side checked properly.
Are the case packs worth buying?
If you treat every tank, or you look after more than one diesel, yes - several of these lines are sold by the case, including the 4 and 16 ounce Exergy bottles and their winter blend. For a truck that only gets a periodic cleaner, single bottles make more sense. We stock both so you can match the purchase to how you actually use it.
